My sincere condolences to the entire Moose Skowron family. I played baseball with Moose in the White Sox fantasy camp in 1991 and it was a blast. He tutored me and it seemed like he genuinely was interested in me as a player and friend. I am sure that was his persona with everyone. I treasure the photos I have of him with me and will never forget him as a player and the gentleman that he was. I pray that he, Tommie Agee, and Minnie Minoso are together playing ball and commiserating. May God Bless the Skowron family.

Used to watch the Yanks in early 60's religiously, as a kid 8 - 12 yrs old. The days not only of the 'big 4' - but also - Hector Lopez, Elston Howard, Phil Linz, Tony Kubek, Clete Boyer, etc. Moose was a ROCK at first base, and I will NEVER FORGET that he was a part of some of the BEST years of my life, as far as baseball is concerned. RIP Moose!

I am from Austin MN and went to all home baseball games. Talked to Moose a lot and he gave us kids a lot of advice. He would always give us baseballs so we could play our games in the parks of Austin. I have an official shirt with his printed signature along with all the LA Dodgers players when he played for Dodgers which was my favorite team. A man of strength and heart for the kids that loved baseball. RIP

I knew Moose from our days in Chicago where I played softball against him. I also knew him in NY city when my company (Colgate) sponsered the pregame show with Red Barber. Moose invited me into the locker room to meet Johnny Blanchard the 3rd catcher. Johnny autographed a National league baseball for my two sons. Moose was always a favorite Yankee of mine. I also played basketball with his uncle John Skowron at Forman High School in Chicago. Jack Blanchard

Just saw this on a face book page. My dad Joseph C. Skowron had Moose come to St. Adalbert's Holy Name Mens Club, East St.Louis,IL many years ago, probably in the 50's. My dad wrote to him sometime in 2008 he was very proud of Moose. My deepest sympathy.

I'm so sorry about the loss of Bill "Moose" Skowron. Years ago Moose had invited me and my husband to his restaurant so he could sign photos I have of him and my Dad at Yankee Stadium. I regret that I never made the trip and to meet him in person. I wish I knew why my Dad was at the stadium and standing next to Moose and Mantle. I never had the chance to ask my Dad.
My prayers go out to the Skowron family. May he R I P

Today, I opened my weekly copy of Sports Illustrated to learn of the passing of Bill Skowron. One of my earliest fond recollections was attending a Yankees-Tigers game in old Briggs Stadium in Detroit in 1957. I was wearing a Yankees uniform which my father had bought me. Our seats were near the Yankees bullpen. On that day Bill was standing in the bullpen with a few Yankee relief pitchers; he noticed me in my uniform, smiled, pointed up to me and let his teammates know they had a Yankees fan to support them. It was a moment that I've treasured all these years and have nostalgically recalled when my own sons wore the uniform as small children. Thank you for the memories, Bill. (Toronto, Canada)

To the Skowron family-i just learned of Moose's passing today. He was my Godfather, something I was always proud to tell people. I last talked to him when my Mom and Dad, Stan and Norma Standinger, passed away last year. The last he spoke to them both on the phone was at their 65th wedding anniversary in 2008. I am saddened by his passing but I have many fond memories of him. I have pictures as a little girl wearing dresses he bought me. A friend from Austin MN told me he remembers sitting in Harry Smith's shoe store in Austin, talking with Moose, Harry, and my Dad. I will inform my family back in Austin that Moose has passed as he was a special part of our family. Our condo lenses to you all, and all of Moose's buddies. He certainly was a legend, and an all around great guy, as is evident by the following here. God bless, Lori (Standinger) Bartee, Chesapeake, VA. [email protected]

I 1st met Moose when I was 5 years old in about 1951. He came to Austin, Mn to work for Hormel meat packing and play baseball for the Austin Packers with older stars like Joe Raso. Working for my dad (Bob Kasak) at Hormel meant he followed dad to our house every night after work – he loved mother Irene's Bohemian cooking (and insisted on doing the dishes after eating). Probably ate 6 meals a week with us for 6 or 7 years every Fall & Winter, for back then, it was necessary for pro-players to have a winter job ‘cause they weren't compensated like today's players. So after each baseball season Bill found his way back to Austin & Hormel. He gave me my 1st baseball glove, and taught me a love for the game. He taught that young lad something even more special, how to be a gentleman. For that's what Bill was before he was a ball player. Always the greatest guy from which a young impressionable kid could learn. Thanks Bill for that memorable decade of the 1950s, the baseball glove and thanks for the 1956 Yankee team autograph ball.

He broke my heart endlessly when the Yankees always beat the Red Sox in the 50's; yet still he was a fine player and a part of my boyhood that brings a smile to my face.

Although sad to learn that Moose is gone, I have good memories of him and other great Yankees. While attending Jr. High School in St. Petersburg, FL., I often skipped school to sneak downtown to watch the Yankees during Spring training. I'll never forget all the great players and how nice they were about signing autographs, which I have to this day. Moose was one of my favorite players.

I met Moose a few times with a "good Friend" in the resturant he owned. His Yankee stories were always great,I told him I bet if he played for the Sox during those years he would of tipped the scale for them and would of meant more Series for this City. He was and should be remembered as a total All-Star and great competitor. He was all Chicago........

As a young child back in 1968 my father brought me to a Yankee old timers game. After the two inning old timer game the former players would watch the game from the stadium. We had box seats about 8 rows up from the visitors dugout. Two gentleman came and sat down next to me and my father. My father asked me if I knew who they were. It was Moose and Gil McDougal. I had a crew cut and I remember Moose rubbing my head and admiring my haircut. He said, "Nice haircut kid". I will always remember that.

My cousin Cary Czarnecki (the eldest cousin of the Slezak family who knew Moose from our year's on Long Ave. in Cragin) sent this wonderful email to my family about Moose that I wanted to share.
"In my estimation, Moose was one of the most thoughtful and "classy" individuals a person could ever expect to meet. For example, on the first night of my father's (John Czarnecki's) wake, he was one of the first people to arrive so that he could offer his condolences to my mother (Irene). He was also an altar boy at the weddings of both Uncle Chester and Aunt Sophie and my father and mother at St. Stanislaus Bishop + Martyr. Moose's dad, "Pops" Skowron, managed many of the young "Cragin" ballplayers, including our Uncle Chester (Gumpy) and my father... a great man ---Moose."
In later years, I would have the good fortune to meet Moose at functions and would approach Moose abd simply mention my mother Alice, the youngest Slezak girl, and boom, Moose would pull me aside and go right down the list to ask how everyone in our famiy was doing? He would talk about the impact my uncle's had on him, which of course was extremely humbling coming from one of the most humble and sincere people I have ever met.
God Bless You Moose.
Time to go with the pitch and knock in another HUGE run upstairs!

It is 1963 in old Crosley Field in Cicinatti. I was 11 years old and my first game to see in person. Drysdale is pitching that evening and Moose did not start. I was extremely unhappy Moose did not start. I was a Yankee fan and wanted to seem him play. It is the top of the 7th and Moose was standing at the edge of the dugout and I was half way up behind the 1st base dugout. I stood up and hollered "MOOSE SKOWRON IS THE BEST 1ST baseman in baseball". Somehow he heard me and found me and motioned me down. I asked my father if it was ok and he said - G0. I took my twin brother and we got his autograph in the middle of the game. The highlight of our young lives. Moose knew this would be something we would never forget and he was right.
GOD BLESS HIS SOUL!

Cookie, Lynnette,
Please accept on behalf of the Kenah family our DEEPEST condolences. I met Moose(Uncle Bill) when I was 4-5 years old. Some of my best memories are sitting with Moose and my Uncle Art Kenah and my dad and other assorted neighborhood dignitaries listening to all their stories about the old days. Also, when they opened the bar in Cicero, all the great times we had with Moose helping me behind the bar or even waiting tables all the while telling stories and teasing me for the enjoyment of all who came. All the trips to the Maris and Mantle golf outings with his "Chicago" guys in the motor home are memories I will never forget. He truly was a wonderful man. I truly did learn a lot from Moose growing up. God rest him and may the Holy Spirit comfort you all. Matt Kenah
