William Spence Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 23 to Jun. 4, 2015.
William J. "Bill" Spence, visionary, activist and entrepreneur, of Hingham, Hyannis Port and Bal Harbour, Fla., left this world on May 10, 2015, at the age of 85. His life was devoted to service, both to family and community. He was a visionary and had the courage to stand up for what he believed was right and made the world a better place because of it. He served in the United States Navy as an officer during the Korean War and was an elected member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, serving constituents on the South Shore of Boston from 1969-1975. One of his proudest achievements was sponsoring legislation that raised the minimum wage in Massachusetts twice during his years of service. He was instrumental in changing the music scene in Boston in the 1960s, bringing both local bands and up and coming major rock n roll musicians to the Surf Ballroom, his club on the South Shore of Boston. He had the foresight to book the Rolling Stones for their first U.S. tour and ran the first major integrated concert in the South at a time when segregation was still the norm. He did this knowing he would lose his shirt because most of the parents, black and white alike, would not allow their children to attend the concert. He was right on the financial end but proud of his choice to go forward. He was also ahead of his time in the field of public transportation, operating the first commuter boat from the South Shore to Boston and fought tirelessly over the years to keep ferries alive on the waterfront. He was the president of Massachusetts Bay Lines, the ferryboat company he founded, for over 50 years. He was the former president of Interferry, an international association of ferryboat operators from around the world. He also served as a longtime director of the Rockland Trust Company, a local, community oriented bank in Massachusetts, started by his grandfather. He grew up in Rockland and attended the Fessenden School, Phillips Exeter Academy and was a graduate of both Harvard College and Harvard Business School. He was a member of Resurrection Parish in Hingham for over 50 years and taught confirmation classes to teens there. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization devoted to helping those in need and to the principals of charity, unity and fraternity. He was married to Wilma Collins Spence for 62 years and raised a family with her on the South Shore of Boston. Wilma was engaged as a partner with him on many of his business ventures and affectionately known to him all these years as Precious. They shared a love of family, dogs, golf, warm weather and humor. Cape Cod and Florida were special places they shared together. They were members together of the Hyannis Port Club in Massachusetts and the Surf Club, Indian Creek and La Gorce Country Clubs in Miami. Bill was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and was proud to have lived a life that embodied the philosophy given to him at a young age by his father: You are not one bit better than anyone else nor one bit worse. People may be smarter or stronger or wealthier than others, but in the eyes of God, all people are equal. It was his hope to be remembered as a considerate husband, father and friend to all. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Wilma Collins Spence; four children, Jay Spence and his wife Bonnie Baldwin of Pembroke, Darcie Spence of Mill Valley, Calif., Jeffrey Spence and his wife Mary Brigid Ratelle of Charlotte, N.C., Kerry Spence and her husband Robert Fitzgerald of Needham; his brother, John Spence of Duxbury; his brother-in-law, John Collins of Wellesley Hills; his sister-in-law, Barbara Spence of Scituate; 11 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and many friends, neighbors and colleagues. He was predeceased by his parents Grace and Frederick Spence of Rockland and his brother Robert Spence of Scituate. Funeral from George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington Street (Rte. 16), Wellesley, Monday, June 1, at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at Saint Pauls Church in Wellesley at 11 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday, May 31, 2015, from 1-5 p.m. at George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will be private. For directions and online guest book, please see www.gfdoherty.com. I remember fondly the eight years I worked for Bill. His appointment of me at age 23 as Port Captain is only one example of the fairness with which he treated people and the opportunities he provided regardless of age or sex. A truly honorable man I will remember forever.

Sorry to learn of Mr Spence's passing. I so enjoyed my many years commuting on the gracious lady and then the more modern boats. Such a humble and accomplish man. Was always delighted to be able to share his story of keeping the harbor open to all of us. Jay done him proud as he did all of us thanks fondly Austine Frawley formally of Scituate Mass.

All of us in and around Boston Harbor will miss Bill's great smile and that twinkle in his eye. Also the time he'd take to chat and share a story, he loved to tell a good story with everyone, the great and the small.

I remember the days when there was one boat in, and one boat out of Boston - the Nan and the Vineyard Queen. It was a time when if you just missed the boat the boat would come back to get you ... not to complaints, but to cheers from follow commuters. You felt loved, real love, for this was a family ... from the passengers, the crew, to the Captain, for thier leader's wisdom that set the Mass Bay Lines standard, Bill Spence.

The Captains back then were very often young ladies looking for that first chance, long before it was in or cool. It was Bill Spence that laid the foundation back then for all the Lady Captains in Boston Harbor today ... and as we look out on Boston Harbor and see all the commuter boats coming and going, we can all give a big smile, remembering that it was Bill Spence who started it all.

He's left this world a better place, and he's left a great family to carry on.

With God's Blessing, Thanks Bill!

Epitaph

William J. Spense

"Bill Spense"

Dear Wilma and Family,

As I have read-over (and listened), to Bill's epitaph, I was amazed at how little I knew about who the man--he really was! And, as I look over the skyline of my life, it is Bill who stands taller than most of those towering figures, of whom I've met, and have had the pleasure of meeting--over my sixty-seven years.

How many untold and countless dreams, came-true, for so many hundreds (if not thousands), just because of the efforts and integrity of Bill Spense! I only wish that I had known him better, than for the brief time that I knew him, over the four years from (1965/1969).

What a privilege--for-us (in the hey-day of Rock & Roll), that we were there, to-host for thousands--at the birthplace of fun, music, and the world of mirth that Bill created, at the Landmark Nightclub (known around the world as), The Surf Nantasket!

And, to have met and warmed up for many of the headliners of the sixties, as well, at The Surf Salisbury, Surf Hyannis, & Mountain Park in Holyoke. How fortunate we were to have landed on the shore of Hull, Massachusetts; Boston's Pilgrims, whom became the first-house-band at the Surf--after the long standing Rockin' Ramrods.

What fascinates me the most (with respect to Bill), is what I never knew about him! I never knew of his tremendous compassion for humanity, his involvement, and his ability, in helping to relieve the suffering of so many, amongst the other great acts of kindness, and all that he had accomplished throughout his life--that I was not aware of!

I am so glad that I knew, met and worked for the great impresario: Bill Spense! And, Like everything he touched, he was a God-send to thousands of people--great-and-small!

May the Great God of Heaven continue to richly bless the family of Bill and Wilma Spense,as the great Bill Spense remains (behind the scenes), conducting his greatest performance from a stage far away from where I last spoke to him (in his office), on Hull Shore Drive in 1968.

What a great and distinguished honor it has been, just to say--that I knew Bill Spense!

My sincere condolences,

Bob Julian

A wonderful cousin, mentor and friend, Bill was truly a "waterfront lion," who battled with agencies and private developers over 50 years to keep public access at Rowes Wharf. He convinced them in the end to keep the links to the sea. The Boston Harbor Hotel is unique today because of the ferries Bill kept running from 1963, along with the harbor tour boats. He was always ready to share amazing stories, and he loved Boston and its traditions. When the ferry operators came in from around the world one year, he organized a great Boston event, a clambake in Charlestown at the USS Constitution, as well as a ferry parade of 25 vessels in the Harbor. Great times, Bill! You and your family are a wonderful example of public service. Though you will be greatly missed, we will never forget what you did to keep the ferries alive to Hingham and Hull. Love and sympathy to Wilma and the whole family.

Such a wonderful man...great husband, father, businessman and community leader. I feel very honored to have been able to know Mr. Spence very well, as my neighbor and the father of my friend, Jay. Also, as having employed our Dad on a part-time basis thru the years at The Surf, as Campaign Manager for his successful campaigns for State Representative...and other opportunities. God Bless you, Mr. Spence...and God Bless you Mrs. Spence and all of your family.
