VIDAVER, Dr. William Elliott
1921 - 2017
Born February 2, 1921 to Matthew Vidaver and Marguerite Bernhardt in San Francisco, Bill died peacefully while visiting Salt Spring Island with his family on August 31, 2017. In 1965, he moved to Canada with his wife Josephine (née Brown; 1927-2006, marriage 1951) and married Dr. Gabrielle (Gaby) Weiss in 2007. He lived in West Vancouver throughout his 52 years in Canada and was a professor of plant physiology at Simon Fraser University until retiring in 1992. He became a Canadian citizen in 1991. Bill is survived by his wife Gaby, his sister Elissa Muth, his children Judith, daughter of Carmen Vidaver (née Sqambati), and Aaron, son of Josephine Vidaver. He was predeceased by Carmen, their son Billy, Josephine, and his brother Matthew Vidaver Jr. Please visit the SFU Retirees Association site for more on Bill's scientific career (sfu.ca/retirees/sfu- community/in-memoriam). I first met Bill as a student at SFU and he was an inspiration then and a favourite of the students. Fast forward many years and I meet him yet again at his wedding to Gabby. So wonderful that he enjoyed his last years in a happy marriage and supportive family. With love
