Willie Alford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 13 to Oct. 16, 2014.
"The Lord their God will save his people on that day as a shepherd saves his flock. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown." -Zechariah 9:16-17 After a life filled with children and grandchildren, shared alongside his high school sweetheart, Willie James Alford of Port Allen died on October 11, 2014, the day before his 68th birthday. Growing up in a home with three brothers, he was nourished by his father's passion for the outdoors and a mother's love. He attended Port Allen Middle School and Port Allen High School, serving as senior class president in 1965. Following trade school and work as a machinist, he started out as a salesman at Industrial Parts Specialties and developed a career spanning 30 years that culminated in his position as vice president. Public service was a part of his young adulthood and later life, serving on boards for the City of Port Allen and Holy Family Parish. But he may have touched more lives with a whistle as a volunteer community basketball coach for the Knights of Columbus. His faith was ever on the forefront and he was a proud man of Manresa, the Jesuit house of retreats in Convent. While his residence was in south Louisiana, his heart was always in the mountains of Tennessee, where an annual Thanksgiving pilgrimage became a family tradition. While he never had enough time to dedicate to fishing or vintage cars, his family more than benefitted from the hours and days they received instead. Quick with a joke and a smile, his caring nature failed to allow him to take more than he gave. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dora Dupuy Alford; daughter Jennifer Alford LeJeune and husband Ron; son Jason Alford and wife Chanda; son Jeremy Alford and wife Karron; brother Ivy Alford Jr. and wife Kitty; and brother Terry Alford and wife Sue. He was also survived by grandchildren Jace LeJeune, Josh LeJeune, Cody Alford, Jamie LeJeune, Kristyn Alford, Zoe Alford and Keaton Alford; and mother-in-law Faye Fornea Dupuy. He was preceded in death by his parents Ivy Alford Sr. and Mary Alice; brother J.D. Alford; son Joshua Alford; and daughter Jamie Alford. Pallbearers will be his grandsons along with Donald Alford, Ken Alford, Michael Broussard, Andy Credeur, Will Ganley and Michael Marix. A wake will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Wilbert Funeral Home in Port Allen. A closed-door rosary will commence at 5 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Brusly, with viewing beginning at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged for the Jubilee Campaign at Holy Family Church, P.O. Box 290, Port Allen, LA 70767. Please share sympathies and condolences at www.wilbertservices.com.

Dear Dora and Family,

Was so sorry to learn of Mr. Willie's passing. Did not learn of his death until I saw Jerry Bourgeois at the Farmer's Market this morning. Had I known I would have come and paid my respects, as I think the world of you, Jennifer and the rest of the family. I know of the miraculous recovery which allowed him to spend more years than his prognosis would have given him with all of you. I will keep you and the family in my prayers.

To the Alford family,

No words can express the sorrow I feel at the terrible loss of such a wonderful man.

J.D. and Mr. Alford built my house and my mom kept Ken at the nursery she had on Georgia St. Time goes by so very fast. Dora, I know you remember us going on the ferry together. Seems that you were just a child.

I ALWAYS loved you and your family and always will!

Dora,

Cheryl and I are saddened to hear of Willie's passing. It seems just like yesterday that we went to Manchac to enjoy a dinner together and I tried to explain why I called Cheryl Dora. I will always remember the times Willie and I had lunch at Jimmy's in Convent and would laugh our problems away. The first time I met Willie I told him it was the bottom of the ninth and he was up to bat and needed to hit a home run. Of course he did and still was hitting them until his passing. Please accept Cheryl and my sympathy on Willie's passing may the peace of God which is beyond all understand sustain you and yours during this difficult time.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
