Zachary Gibson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 4, 2018.
Zachary Bradford Gibson, 52, of Honoka'a died on November 4, 2018 at Pohai Malama in Hilo, Hawaii. Born on May 12, 1966 in the Philippines at the Subic Bay U.S. Naval Base and raised in the San Francisco bay area, he worked as a journeyman plumber for the Cardelini's in Redwood City, CA and trained as a French chef at the Barbarossa in Menlo Park, CA. Cooking was his passion. Zack graduated Woodside High School, attended college in San Diego, met his wife Johanna, married in San Francisco and moved to Hawaii in 1995. Once in Hawaii, he started farming medicinal plants on family land on the Hamakua Coast for Pu'u'ala Farms. He was the founder and owner of Kanaka Kava restaurant, a traditional Awa bar serving Native Hawaiian cuisine in Kona, Hawaii. Zack's huge personality and endless energy made him a natural host, who loved to entertain and make people laugh. At Pu'u'ala farm, he started a volunteer worker program for participants to learn about organic and sustainable farming. Zack was an avid fisherman, both off shore and spear fishing. He spent many days on the Ho'okele, the family boat pulling in ahi, ono, mahi and marlins. He loved to travel in the US and abroad. He visited Egypt, Cambodia, Peru, Thailand, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Zealand where he absorbed the culture and history there. Zack is survived by his parents William E. Gibson and Kahala-Ann Trask Gibson, sister Haunani Trask Gibson, brother William Trask Gibson, former wife Johanna Gibson and many extended family members. Please send condolences to Dodo Mortuary, 199 Wainaku Street, Hilo Hawaii 96720. Phone: (808) 935-5751. Celebration of Life Services are open to close friends and family: Saturday, January 19th, 12 noon Kanaka Kava located at 75-5803 Ali'i Dr, Suite B2, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. I am so very sorry to hear the news about Zack and want to express my sorrow and condolences to his family. I remember Zack best seeing him behind the counter at his Kanaka Kava serving up those great Hawaiian dished. Zack tried his best but I could not get used to the Kava beverages he brewed up that were so popular with the locals. But most of all I remember the jeep tour he gave me and my family when we were visiting Bill and Kahala Ann at their Kona home. Zack had a full time job at the ranch on the north side of the Big Island but his father gave him two days off to give us the grand tour. It became known as "The Four Wheel Drive And Still Alive Tour". Zack took us places in his 4-weeler that most visitors to the Big Island will never see. Up and down steep roads (4-wheel drive was needed), on the beaches where there wasn't anyone but us and the beautiful white sand and black stones. Then into the woods to see waterfalls that only Zack knew about, and down barely passable roads to reach view points of the ocean and beaches that would be World Class for any photographer. He stopped to winch down a banana tree so we could sample the fruit right off the tree. Then to the Ancient Hawaiian Fishing Lagoon that Zack's uncle once managed and Zack told how he helped his uncle there one summer, and the secret swimming hole in the lava at the Fishing Lagoon. A great experience that I will never forget and have it burned into my memory. Finally to Volcano National Park where the park ranger allowed special access (because of Zack's native Hawaiian status) to within 10' of red-hot lava flowing towards the sea to make the traditional sacrifice to Pele, Volcano Goddess of Hawaii. That was an experience I will never forget. Those good times I will always remember and like all of Zack's friends I will miss Zack. May he rest in peace.

My brother Zack was a big guy with an even bigger heart. He was boisterous and gregarious and the consummate host. He loved entertaining all those who joined him at his creation Kanaka Kava. We shared a love of fast cars and fishing. We learned many years ago when fishing for steelhead that you need to keep moving on the river to maximize your chances. When he had finally come to accept the finality of his condition, he wrote me: Don't worry brother! I'll fish upstream and you fish down and we will meet back at the spot we stared from and fish together. I love you my brother. Take care, Z. While we didn't always see eye to eye, we loved each other deeply. He was a hard fighter right to the very end and he has made me a better person for having known him. I miss you Zachary, safe travels brother.
