Alan Joseph Obituary

LAFAYETTE -- Alan K. Joseph "Mr. LaFayette", 86, of LaFayette, passed away at 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born on May 26, 1939 in Cairo, Ohio to the late Cloyd and Edna {Cook} Joseph. On June 11, 1961 he married the love of his life, Karen Schumacher, who preceded him in death on May 7, 2025, rejoining each other in heaven, after 64 years together.

Alan graduated from LaFayette Jackson High School in 1957. He owned and operated Al's Best Mart in Pandora from 1967-1972. He came back to LaFayette in 1972 and worked at Wayne's IGA until 1987. He was elected village clerk of LaFayette in 1964, served as councilman and then was later elected Village Mayor. Staying true to his nickname, "Mr. LaFayette", he held many offices for their Historical Society and was the EMCEE for their village parade for several years. He worked for the Ohio State Highway Patrol as a school bus inspector until he "retired" in 2012. Even after retirement, he found countless ways to keep busy; playing Santa Claus for Macy's as well as for family and friends, on top of all of Mr. LaFayette "duties". He loved fishing in Canada, traveling with his family, and raising his prize winning dahlias with his wife.

He was an Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Reds and Lima Locos fan. He was a strong Christian who was a witness of dedication to the Lord. Alan was a family man and his hugs and "I Love Yous" were endless. He was head chef, gingerbread house maker, transportation expert, and cheerleader for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughters: Jennifer (John) Bingham and Jenelle (Jon) Laing, both of LaFayette, four grandchildren: Caleb (Alli) Bingham, Lauren (Kasey) Bonifas, E.J. (Tessa) Laing, and Eliza (Mark) Boggs, five great-grandchildren: Noah Michael, Cara Joy, Evelyn Suzanne, Hazel Jo, and Bobby Jon, sister-in-laws: Martha (Charles) Hefner, Lynn (John) Fishbeck, and Ellen Joseph, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Karen, parents, son: Gregory Alan Joseph, and brothers: Roger (Gloria) Joseph, Vernon (Libby) Joseph, Tom (Roberta) Joseph, and Dale Joseph. The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at the funeral home. Friends may visit 1 hour prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. Pastor Bob Clinger will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the LaFayette Methodist Church.

Dear Jennifer and Jenelle, I’m sorry that I cannot attend the service tomorrow. Please know that you have been in my thoughts this past week. Your Dad was the last of my generation of Joseph’s who were living in the Lima area.
