I first met Mike when I just started out as a freshman at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. This was in August 1988, over 30 years ago. When I first saw him on the school grounds by the pond during orientation day, I couldn't believe I was looking at a true giant since he towered over everyone else. My late father took a photo of him but I'll have to dig through his albums to see if I can find it; I remember the picture shows him standing under a tree towering over a small crowd of people around him. As I got to know him better during my time there, I saw him as great fellow and even invited him to come along with me to my home for Thanksgiving after he mentioned that he couldn't afford to go back home in Michigan (imagine this tugging at my heart after hearing him say that and if I had the money, I would have gladly given it to him for a round-trip plane ticket). I remember he shared a dorm room with Barrett Mash - who was 6'10", I believe - and they both had long beds in the same Anderson Hall dorm building where I had my room on the 2nd floor. I remember us comparing our sizes, and that his hand was as long as my foot! I recall that he once told me that he had a twin brother attending another college (in Colorado if I recall correctly), and I never knew that when I first met Mike I was looking at the tallest twin brother in the world! Too bad I didn't get to meet his brother, and that would have been something! After the '88-'89 school year, I did not return to HSU and I never saw Mike or any of my other HSU friends again. I was pleasantly surprised years later when I learned that the scary giant character in the movie "It Follows" was actually him! I did not learn of his passing until last weekend when I used my phone to look up Mike online so I could show my friend who he was, and imagine my shock in seeing links to news stories of his death. I felt saddened for him and I know I'll never forget him. My thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family.

I knew Michael from GM Powertrain in Pontiac, Michigan. I did security and he worked up on the floors. I used to talk to him in the lobby and the GM Aramark store. He was a great guy and will miss him.

Mike was a wonderful person, student, and player for me at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. He was loved by his teammates, fellow students, faculty, and fans. He left us to play at UCLA his last two seasons. We love you and will miss you Mike. RIP

May he RIP. Our family grew up in the same neighborhood as Mike and we also attended the same church. We passed each other often and i have fond memories. This is very sad to hear and he was far too young. I speak for our entire family in wishing his family our deepest condolences at this difficult time.

My prayers and sympathy to Mike's family. I grew up in the same subdivision as the Lanier family and went to elementary and middle school with Mike. I remember him as a gentle person. I am very sorry for your loss.

Remembering fondly what kind and gentle men both boys were. Jim, I am also a twin and lost my brother as well. Special prayers for you. Just remember... the twin bond can never be broken....
