Frederick George Obituary

On April 1, 2025, Frederick Walter George, loving son, brother, husband (widower) and father, left his daughters for an endless round of golf with Mom, on Cloud #1 in Heaven. This was something he had wanted to do since the day his wife, Claire, passed away.
Fred, was the youngest of four children, born to Thomas and Lillian George, in Woodland, Ca., on August 16, 1930. At the young age of six years old, his mother finally allowed Fred to attend the one room school house, that served students in grades 1-8. But Fred soon developed his own idea. He had a friend who attended the school in town, Beamer Elementary School. That school had sports and Fred wanted to play. So, without telling anyone he took off on his bicycle and rang the doorbells of three of the Woodland school board members. Our father was successful in garnering their permission to attend Beamer School. This turned out to be a life impacting decision.
Fred, graduated from Woodland High School in 1949. He was the first recipient of the Jay Sehorn Award – recognizing the most valuable player. Fred grew into one of the best two sport athletes to play at Woodland High and beyond. His athletic achievement earned him induction into the Woodland Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1998.
Two years of military service, in the Korean Conflict, in the middle of his college career, afforded Fred more maturity. As he and the Chico Wildcats lost only once in each of the 1954 and '55 football seasons, winning the title in the latter. In 1995, Fred was inducted into the Chico State Athletic Hall of Fame, for outstanding performance in football and baseball.
During his two-year tenure in the US Army, Fred saw action in Korea. He served as a Sergeant First Class with the 40th Division – Combat Unit. Sergeant George, earned the Bronze Star, for performing acts of valor when operating in combat zones.
Fred was the first person in his family to attend college. After graduating from Chico State, Fred went on to earn his Master's Degree in Physical Education from the University of Oregon, at Eugene. He then accepted a physical education teaching position at Burroughs High School in China Lake, Ca. There he met and married, his wife of 63 years, Claire Pope.
In 1959 Claire and Fred, moved to Fremont, Ca. They taught at Centerville High School from 1959-1961. Their first daughter, Janis, was born in 1961. Fred was offered a baseball coaching position at Lodi High School, so to Lodi they moved. Younger daughter, Jill, arrived in 1963. Fred coached varsity baseball at Lodi High School for 18 seasons. He also coached Legion Baseball for three seasons, one of which earned him a state tournament berth. Also at Lodi High, Coach George, was an assistant football coach for seven years, and athletic director for three years. The days we enjoyed the most, was when Fred (suggested and encouraged by Claire) coached the Lodi High Girls' Basketball Team for five years. What a difference he made!
For several years Claire and Fred were active members of the Pacific Seniors Golf Association. Happily, they traveled throughout many western states playing golf and meeting new people.
When inducted into the Woodland Athletic Hall of Fame Coach George shared, "I dearly loved to play. I didn't play well, but I loved to play! I hope that sometime during my coaching career, I helped some young fella or young lady, get a step further than they would have without me."
As per Fred's request there will not be a service: "At the young age of 94, few of my friends are still here!"
Thank you to Juli's Village Coffee Shop in Lodi, for your care and kindness. Seldom did Dad miss a breakfast!

Coach George made a lasting impact-anyone who played for him was better for it. I´m especially grateful he chose to coach the girls´ basketball ; I was lucky to be on his very first team. I want to mention Mrs. George, as she gave my mother the confidence to join the women´s 18-hole group at WGCC, and that meant so much to her-and to me.

My late husband (Dan Mettler) held Mr. George in very high regard. His guidance and integrity as a coach provided Dan with skills that led to a lifelong involvement with baseball both playing and coaching our grandson. The memories are many and touch my heart. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Fred was a fellow coach at LUSD. We worked together for decades. He was my friend and menter. Karen and I had many adventures with Fred and Claire and the kids. lots of golf, claming, camping and so much more.
Claire and Karen surprised Fred and Jim on Valentines Day with a round of golf at Pebble Beach. We were friends with the George´s for 55 years! Fred was a big supporter of Jim and Lodi High. He was a big part of our life for many years! He will be missed, and remembered fondly

Fred George was a kind encouraging person. I enjoyed him so as Mr George my PE teacher and later in life also when I had the opportunity to see him. He was always interested in what I was doing and treated me as a friend. A fine, fine man.
I will never forget his his exhortations as we lined up for PE and his reading of the announcement bulletin "do a job for yourselves, fellas, don't break down". I can hear his distinctive voice perfectly.
He was a master of pitching "spinners" when we played mush-ball softball. He had a such fun with it as all the students did also. Despite being a no-nonsense "military" man during the crazy 60s-70s we all loved him and I never heard a single bad word or complaint about him from any of the students. I think everyone could read him clearly...he was the real deal was transparent in that regard...and knew him to be a fair and caring person. The world needs a lot more Fred Georges. Love you, Fred. I and the world will miss you. --John

I am so sorry to hear of Fred's passing. I send hugs and prayers to the George family. It is bittersweet but know Fred is finally home with his beloved Claire.
Peter and i enjoyed the friendship of Fred and Claire over the years and have many happy memories of our get together's. I know for certain that Peter will also be playing a round of heavenly golf with Fred and Claire or just BS like they always did about Lodi High days. Fred and Claire were so good to Peter during his days at Lodi High and he had the highest respect for both of them.
They will be missed but never forgotten.
Love Barbara

I was Fred´s neighbor on Des Moines Road. We have fond memories of Fred driving over to our place on his 4WD vehicle to visit my husband Sebastian. He will be fondly missed. Our prayers are with the family.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Coach George. The finest baseball coach I ever had. I am also very to have played for Lodi High and all three of the years Fred coached the Lodi American Legion. Now maybe I know the reason we got into a fight overtime we play the Woodland Legion team! Love and miss you coach

I am so saddened to hear this. Fred was my P.E. instructor at Lodi High ~´65-`66. I remember he, wisely, cut me from the sophomore baseball team. Who was I trying to kid? I was no baseball player! I reconnected with Fred back in 2004 when I moved to Woodbridge and he and Claire lived down the street. I would see him at UOP basketball games quite frequently and always made sure to stop and say `hi´. I would always enjoy running in to him around town ie Lowe´s, Strings, Raley´s. I hadn´t seen him in a couple of years but often thought about him. He and Claire were always so friendly and kind. I´m glad I knew Fred, and I will miss him. My sincerest condolences to his family.

Fortunately a friend who lives in Lodi sent me this obituary or wouldn´t have known of Coach George´s passing. I was one of many students who attended LUHS from 1960-64 & I moved away immediately after graduating & wasn´t involved in the Lodi community again, however, I was fortunate enough to have Mr. George as my PE teacher in my junior year. As I remember he had a sort of gravely voice & he yelled out my name as my class was swimming. I thought I was doomed & I knew I hadn´t done anything to attract his attention in a group activity, but I reported to him apprehensively. He said "son you need to go see Coach Robinson & tell him I sent you to tryout for the swimming team". I did as recommended by Mr. George. I made the team, swam, moved from Lodi, played water polo in Jr. College, got a job coaching swimming & after serving in Vietnam, graduated from Sac State, taught & coached as a career. I never saw Mr. George after my Jr. year, but he was instrumental in starting me on the path I´ve lived happily to this day. Thank you Coach George!

To the George family,I'm truly sorry to hear of your Dad's passing.
I will cherish the time cleaning house for them and know them. And seeing
What woodwork your dad was working on when I arrived.
I know he will be sadly missed as your mother is .Now they have come
Together again in heaven.
