Robert Sternfels Obituary

Robert B. Sternfels, 71, died from  cancer on June 21, 2017 in his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was proceeded in death by his mother, Margaret Nancy Sternfels and is survived by his Father, Robert W. Sternfels, his wife, Bobbie Sternfels, his children, Robert A. Sternfels and Katherine Ulvestad, step children Holly Ireland and Brent Cruikshank and 8 grandchildren. He was born in Burbank, California, graduated from college at the University of California at Berkeley, and earned his law degree from the University of San Diego. He practiced law in both California and Arizona for over 40 years.
Bob was a veteran and served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, serving two tours of duty. Bob learned to fly in the Navy, and continued to pursue flying as a hobby throughout his life, even participating in airshows as an aerobatic pilot.
Bob raised his family in Lodi, California where he practiced law and was active with civic engagements. He was the organizer, and volunteer director for the Stockton Airshow for 3 years which raised significant funds for local charities. He also helped start the Mock Trial program for local high school students, and was a key leader in starting a local bank, The Bank of Lodi. In Arizona, he continued to advocate for his community by representing the town of Fountain Hills to improve FAA regulations and flying patterns from Sky Harbor Airport. He also started a Home Owners Association for San Carlos, Mexico, where he also resided. Throughout his life, he was actively involved in his children's and grandchildren's lives--coaching, cheering, encouraging, and loving them all.
Bob loved fishing, diving, and boating, and explored all of these passions with his wife Bobbie. As a natural 'builder', he helped in the design and construction of many homes, and became an accomplished welder, creating artwork and furniture pieces. He loved his garage and could often be found fixing, building, welding, or sculpting something interesting and new. When not in his garage or out on the water, Bob and Bobbie enjoyed traveling to far flung parts of the world.
Bob enjoyed life, and lived it truly and fully, bringing joy to all of those around him.

Robert: Of course We have never met, however; Bob SR. and Nancy & MY Joan {who passed on five months ago) and I were dear friends for many years. I was also a veteran of the 345th Bomb Squadron and Historian of the 98th Bomb Group. How sad it is for me to learn of BOB SR. passing and NOW I learn that he lost you just a few months ago. My sympathy is with ALL your family. The notice of both of you will be in the 98th Bomb Group's next News Letter. I do have an article I wrote titled "SAGA OF THE SAND MAN". IF any of the family would like a copy, I will be MOST happy to provide it.

My Regards & love to ALL of you.

I was Bob's paralegal 20+ years ago in Lodi. He was a genuine person whose passion and zest for life was contagious. Bob was meticulous in his work, but what I will remember most is the pride and love he had for his family. May you find comfort in each other and in your cherished memories. Rest easy, RBS.

Dear Bobbie and Family -

Chuck and I just heard about Bob's passing. We are so very sorry for your loss. Reading Bob's obituary, I wonder how he had time to do all that he did in just 71 years! Chuck and I feel fortunate to have met you and Bob in San Carlos and have enjoyed the times we got together. Will always remember going out on our boat with Bob while he regaled us with his many fishing tales! May you have many smiles to comfort you during this difficult time. Bob put up a truly amazing fight; we thought he was going to win. But now he is at peace. We hope to see you in San Carlos next winter!

With deepest condolences,
Chuck and Bev Trover

Several flying adventures to Baja, with a outboard motor and blowup boat in the seat between us...blowing up the boat, then out to sea bouncing thru the waves, we were going to catch a fish so "Big" we would have to jump overboard holding on to the side of the blowup, to create drag, (no gaff allowed with good reason), the islands, flying home with skin that looked like leather.....and always, always with his happy voice smiling.
WE shall raise a glass of village Mescal to you. For better stories shall then be told.
Show em up there how to really fly.
