Jean Black Obituary

Jean Ann Black, aged 97, of Logan, Ohio passed away on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024 at The Carlin House in Logan, Ohio.

Born May 12, 1927 in Lancaster, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Walter Wesley and Mabel Alberta (Good) Prather.

Jean Ann was a 1945 graduate of Logan High School and earned her bachelor of science in education from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and master of arts in education from Mount St. Joseph College in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a teacher in the Logan-Hocking School District for 30 years, where she was an inductee of the Logan Education Association's Educator's Hall of Fame in 1996. She was also a recipient of the Barton Holl Citizenship Award from the Logan Chamber of Commerce in 2002.

Jean Ann was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Logan, where she also served as secretary and long-time organist. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers honorary, Junior Tourist Book Club and Euterpean Music Club, and served on the boards of the Logan-Holl Foundation and Bowen House. Following retirement, she and her husband volunteered with Meals On Wheels and the Welcome Center of the Hocking Hills Tourism Association.

Jean Ann is survived by two sons, T.J. (Lynette) Black of Lewis Center, Ohio and Jeff (Amy) Black of Logan; one daughter, Carol (Michael) Baird of Logan; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six nieces; two nephews; and special caregivers, Mackenzie Markin and Riley Smith.

Besides her parents, Jean Ann was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Eugene "Gene" Brown (1955) and husband, Frederic Walton Black (2020).

A funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan, officiated by Father Michael Ralph.

Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Logan.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the Black family suggests contributions in Jean Ann's memory may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church- 375 E. Main St., Logan, Ohio 43138 or to Fairhope Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 282 Sells Road, Lancaster, Ohio 43130.
