Who was Ed DiLoreto?
Ed was a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, a husband, a father, but to me he was my dad!
I will share with you some of the stories and memories of my experiences with my dad. My earliest memory that I am still able to recall is a time when dad came home on Forest Ave with some dry ice and placed it in a bucket of water as I watched in awe as it boiled away to nothing as he explained how it was very cold and for me to be careful not to touch it!
When we were young that was a strong family presence as we would always go to someone's house on the weekends and holidays either Uncle Louie and Aunt Peggys, Aunt Gigs, Uncle Tony's, or Grandma and Grandpa DiLoreto it was always a family affair. I remember us going to Mohansic pool, Georges Island, The Connecticut Beaches, the Pocono's, or up to the Adirondacks we always were doing something and as kids we didn't know it at that time but we were blessed!
Many times as a child he would take me to work with him because I believe Mom was busy taking care of mark and Julie whom were several years younger than me, as he always had a second, third or fourth job, even though his full time career was a police officer he always worked side jobs. Whether it was blacktopping, tree service with his lifelong friend John Decrenza, driving for Saucy Susan Foods, Delivering Napa Parts, driving to the Airports, or any number of different jobs he had I somehow ended up going with him which exposed me at a very young age to many different and unusual experiences all of which added to make me the person I am today! Thanks Dad!
The things we did together back then might be frond upon today by some but I believe I am a better more rounded human because of what I experienced with my father.
There were many good times and as life goes some that were not so good, but we all did the best we could with the knowledge had that time and I am happy with the life we had. As a child you don't know any different this is your normal but there was always a roof over our heads and food on the table and what more can you ask for in life?
As the oldest child of three, my brother Mark and my sister Julie didn't have as much time with dad as I had so I guess I had the exposure to dad and being the oldest probably the most mistakes as well!
But it's all good, none of us turned out to be serial killers so I guess Mom & Dad did a pretty good job!
There were many great times growing up in the town of Ossining as we lived on the outskirts of town when there was very little out there. We were always outdoors in a wonderful neighborhood with lots of other kids and the mysterious place scattered everywhere and at that time unlimited wooded areas surrounding Flower Hill and Maryknoll as we were always exploring as children should be, it was a child's paradise sometimes feeling like a world of adventure! We were blessed to be able to have those opportunities and I say Thanks Mom & Dad for giving us a childhood of dreams!
As there were many other experiences with Dad throughout my life too many to list here I could go on and on about all the many good time we had thanks to our father but alas everything must come to an end and the memories, lessons, and discipline that was given by our parents will live with us forever and hopefully we will pass some of the lessons we learned along to our children and grandchildren.
We will miss you Dad but we will never forget your huge presence in our lives!
Rest in peace and may God bless us all.. Amen! With all my Love your baby boy Steven!
