Martha Nierenberg Obituary

Martha de Csepel Nierenberg

Martha De Csepel Nierenberg passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 27 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Budapest in 1924 to the industrialist Manfred Weiss family, she escaped Hungary during the Nazi invasion in March 1944.

After spending 1 1/2 years in Portugal awaiting a visa, she emigrated to the USA in December 1945.

Martha received a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry from Radcliffe College and went on to do research at Rockefeller Institute in Manhattan.

Martha met her husband Ted Nierenberg on a blind date to the premier performance of Guys and Dolls. It was love at first sight. They were married 4 months later on April 29 1951.

Martha and Ted have 4 children- Lisa Nierenberg (David), Karin Weisburgh (Mitchell), Peter Nierenberg (Robbi), and Albert Nierenberg (Catherine), 10 grandchildren, and 3 greatgrandchildren.

Ted and Martha founded The trendsetting tableware company, Dansk International Designs, in 1954. They sold it to the employees in 1985.

Martha was a founding member of the Mount Kisco Daycare Center and served on the board of Northern Westchester Hospital and the Visiting Nurses Association of Westchester.

Martha and Ted resided in Armonk beginning in 1963 and raised their family there. Following Ted's death in 2009, Martha remained in Armonk until the end of 2013 when she moved to the Osborn in Rye.

The family had an intimate memorial service. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to the Mount Kisco Daycare Center.

I saw your mother's obituary in the NYT and I was reminded of our trip to Budapest in October of 1990. We attended a concert of folk songs in a lovely auditorium and my husband sat next to a lovely older woman who told us that this was her first visit to Hungary after leaving as a young girl. She was very moved by the music and said that these were the songs her father had sung to her. I have never forgotten and was reminded when I saw your mother's photograph in the NYT. She looked so much like the woman who sat next to my husband. In any event, your mother was a remarkable woman.

To the Nierenberg Kids: What a remarkable Mother you had. Reading her obituary made me proud to have had a brush with her and to have had her children in my biology class, I remember you well. And what wonderful memories you will always have or this remarkable woman.

From everything I am reading, what a wonderful person! I did not meet her, but our parents did, I believe, and visited the garden. We lost our mom, who you knew Karin, who was one year older last year.

The Freeman family celebrates the life of a great and formidable lady, and we will miss her dearly. Juci was, of course, a lifelong friend of my mom, and spoke beautifully and elegantly at Vera's funeral 8 years ago. We remember fun and close times together at Kings Point and Armonk, and have the warmest memories of our ties with your family. I think of my mom and Juci together, and am sure my late mom would like me to send her love and sympathies to all of you.
