RICHARD BALDWIN Obituary

Richard Sheridan (Dick) Baldwin died on September 15, 2004 at Stamford Hospital. The cause of death was a heart attack. His wit, generous spirit and especially his integrity will be greatly missed by his wife, Edith, and his sons, Richard Jr. (Cheryl) of Salem, NY and John C. (Lois) Baldwin of New Rochelle, NY, his stepdaughters, Ann Pittman (Bob Quillin), Lucia Ratner, Carrie Pittman, his grandchildren Ben and Sam Ratner and Becky and Molly Pittman and their mother, Susan Pittman. His stepson, Freeman Pittman predeceased him. Dick was born May 27, 1910 in Zanesville, Ohio to Mahala and Edgar Baldwin. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio and after graduation from Ohio State University he had an exceptionally adventurous life which included rafting down the Mississippi from Ohio to New Orleans and sailing as an officer-in-training on the SS Manhattan on its pre-war runs to Europe. He briefly studied playwriting at the Pasadena Playhouse, then came to New York to work as a VIP Guide at the 1939 World's Fair. During World War II he was stationed in Britain as a civilian technician for the famous Norden bombsight. When he returned home, he married Nora Connolly of New York. He and his wife lived in the city before moving to Danbury, CT and Larchmont, NY. After Nora Baldwin's death in 1977 he married Edith Pittman of New Canaan, CT in 1978. In the early 1960's he helped to get a much-needed bond issue passed for Danbury schools. In 1962 Dick joined Research Corporation in NYC where he worked on numerous scientific and humanitarian projects worldwide. After retiring in 1980 he felt quite gratified that his work and publications had a small but positive impact on the world. His passions included writing, traveling the world with his wife, Edith, and thought-provoking discussion. In the early 1980's, the New Canaan Players produced his play titled, "The Man in the Book". Among his other published and unpublished works are "The Fungus Fighters", about the developers of the drug nystatin and "On the Other Side: 20th Century Travel Tales", outlining his love of world travel. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the ALS Association.
