SCHARDEIN, HERBERT J. "BUD", SR., 90, died Monday, February 27, 2012.

Bud was born in New Albany, IN, to Herbert and Louise Schardein. He spent almost all his life in Louisville. He grew up in the Portland Neighborhood. He attended duPont Manual High School and Ahrens Trade School. In 1939, he became an apprentice plumber and a member of Plumbers and Gasfitters Local Union 107. He spent his entire career working for the family owned mechanical contracting firm of F.S. Schardein & Sons, Inc., serving as president of the firm from 1977 until his retirement in 1988.

Bud is a 68 year (life) member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 502 and has been a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, since 1963. He received the Rotary International's Paul Harris Award in 2005 for distinguished service to the club and his community. Bud is also a 70 year member of Shawnee Masonic Lodge 830 F & AM and has been a member of Kosair Shrine since 1964. Bud also served as a board member of the Lincoln Federal Savings and Loan Company.

Bud served his country proudly during World War II, as a member of the 338th Engineers Regiment, spending 33 months in the North African and Italian campaigns. He married his bride of 68 years, Dolores, four days before shipping out for North Africa. He was also a member of Bethel St. Paul Church.

Bud is preceded in death by his wife, Dolores and a son, Robert Clarence.

He is survived by his son, Herbert J. "Bud" Schardein Jr. (Sandy) and his daughters, Linda Sue Stephenson (Steve) and Janet Lee Jenkens. He is also the proud grandfather of Robert A. Schardein (Hannah), Stephanie Crossan (Michael), Seana Phelps (Brad), Ben Stephenson (Kerri), Matt Stephenson (Kristen), and Amanda Riddle (Michael).

Bud is also the proud great-grandfather of eight: Braden, Alexander, Sydney, Gracie, Walker, Bennett, Gabriel, and Aiden.

Bud's family would like to express their thanks to the wonderful staff of Twinbrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, while he was a resident and to Mrs. Luanna Wheeler, who served as personal caregiver for he and his wife for three years. All are considered members of our family.

Funeral services will be held at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd., Friday, March 2 at 11 a.m. with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8 p.m.

I am a cousin of Bud's. I thought the world of him and we always had a really good time together. His mother (my aunt ) Louise was always my favorite. I miss all the good times we had and miss him very much.

To all the Schardein Family - The entire Louie and Ruth Breit family offer your family our deepest and heartfelt sympathy. Bud and Louie were great friends for many years. Over the years they worked together they shared a limburger sandwich - or two - with a cold one at the shop. Again, our deepest sympathy to your family.
