John Cfx Obituary

Brother John Shaughnessy, CFX

Louisville - Brother John Shaughnessy, CFX, died at Nazareth Home Friday evening, February 12th at the age of 76. Bro. John was born in Boston, MA to John and Celia Parks Shaughnessy in 1944. They predeceased him and he is survived by two sisters, Ann Shaughnessy and Catherine Gibb and one brother, David.

In 1962, Bro. John entered the Xaverian Brothers and after religious formation and college education, he taught high school in New Jersey from 1968 until 1973 and then served in different school administrative roles to 1988. During this time, he earned an MA degree from Farleigh-Dickinson University and a Ed.D. from Rutgers University.

In 1988, Bro. John began teaching at Spalding University and remained there until 2006. He then moved to Mexico to train teachers and evolved into teaching English as a second language (ESL) in a program for poor citizens looking for language skills to work especially in the tourist industry.

Health issues prompted Bro. John's return to the US settling in Louisville in 2015. Following attention to his medical issues, he again began to teach ESL at Doors to Hope which he continued until early January 2021. A heart attack after the New Year prompted surgery and rehab, but he was unable to recover due to complications from other chronic ailments.

Bro. John will be buried in the Xaverian cemetery at St. Xavier High School following private funeral services on Friday, February 19th. May he rest in peace. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Xaverian Brothers' Missions in Kenya and Congo in care of Ryken House, 1607 Poplar Level Road, Louisville, KY 40217. Ratterman and Sons on Bardstown Road is entrusted with the arrangements and online condolences may be shared at www.ratterman.com.
