Paul Hornung Obituary

Paul Hornung

Louisville - Paul Vernon Hornung, one of the all-time great college and pro football players from the 1950s and 60s, passed away Friday, November 13, 2020 in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, at age 84, after a long battle with dementia.

Hornung is survived by his wife of 41 years, Angela Hornung.

Upon retirement from football, Hornung resumed a successful real estate and investment career and was an entrepreneur. Paul loved his hometown, his friends, and his fans.

Due to COVID restrictions, there will be a private funeral mass at St. Louis Bertrand Church in Louisville, followed by a private burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. A public celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Norton Sports Health Athletics and Learning Complex via the Louisville Urban League, 1535 West Broadway, Louisville, Ky., 40203; or the Sister Visitor Center via Catholic Charities of Louisville, 2911 South Fourth Street, Louisville, Ky., 40208.

Dear Angela,
Kindly accept my sincere condolences with the passing of Mr. Hornung. In 1960, I became an fan of the "Golden Boy" and the Green Bay Packers. Mr. Hornung was my high school idol, and I wore #5 on my uniform and every sports team I played for for the next forty years, I wore #5. In 1998, I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Mr. Hornung in Boston at a autograph show. I told him he was my high school football idol. He smiled and patted me on the should. We took a picture and I relish that moment every day. There is only one "Golden Boy" and may he also rest in Peace. God Bless you Angela and Mr. Hornung too.

Let me share a story about Paul, I used to work at a Mexican restaurant here in Louisville named Chi-Chi’s and Paul had his show in the Fall there a few years in the early 90s and I got to be friends with Paul since I worked the show every week. I told Paul a story that he chuckled over, I said when I was around eight years old my dad was watching the Packers on TV and he said, “ see that guy right there, he is from Louisville, his name is Paul Hornung and he is one of the best.” He became my idol, anyway I told Paul that I wrote to his mother, Loretta, and I asked her for a autograph picture, she was so nice, she obliged and sent me a black and white photo with Paul doing the Heisman Trophy pose and it was signed. To this day I still have it in a frame and it’s hung in my Packers room. Paul loved that story. He will be sorely missed, and Rest In Peace Golden Boy, It was a pleasure watching you play.

Angela, you and Paul are both in my prayers. Paul was one of the most determined persons I've ever known that devoted his career to unequalled EXCELLENCE. Another person I knew with that same determination was my friend since 1976, NBA Commissioner, David Stern. They both have now passed this year, but their determination for CAREER EXCELLENCE is and was utterly remarkable. I was honored, in my life, to know both of them and I consider it a great fortune to have had that opportunity. I'm saddened that you (and we) have now lost Paul amongst us -- but his memory and accomplishment of determined EXCELLENCE will live forever and he will have a place in Heaven that will be special - because it will be filled with others who lived a life of CAREER EXCELLENCE.

As I grew up in Southeastern Wi. I had two idols Paul Hornung and Eddie Mathews. They made my life much more enjoyable and stoked my fire for athletics. I can only send love and prayers to Angela and the family.
