Samuel Sumner Obituary
Sumner, Samuel "Sam",
41, of St. Louis, MO, formerly of Borden, IN, passed peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, July 15, 2014.
Sam is survived by his devoted parents, Sam and Joy Sumner; his handsome son, Evan Sumner; loving fiancée, Mona Desmond; and devoted sister, Kelly Gollar (Joel). He was also a beloved nephew, cousin, friend and colleague to many.
Sam graduated from Borden Elementary and High School. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri (Mizzou) where he was on full scholarship for track and field as both shot put and discus thrower. For over 15 years he was employed by Morgan Stanley in St. Louis, MO, where he served as a financial advisor and Vice President. Sam was also an avid deer hunter. His favorite activities were deer hunting on the farm of his friend Bob outside of St. Louis with his friends and also in southern Indiana with his cousin Jason.
The family and his fiancée Mona wish to thank everyone for their much appreciated messages, texts, visits and endless support during Sam's illness. Our hearts are filled with sorrow for the loss of Sam but we have found much comfort in the love and support shown by everyone.
A memorial and celebration of life will be held at Garr Funeral Home, 7806 Hwy 311, Sellersburg, IN, on Friday, July 25, 2014 from 1-8 p.m. and on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. with a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Anna's Heart Fund, c/o Robert and Keisha Kaelin, First National Bank, 220 Federal Drive, Corydon, IN, 47112.

I just found out about Sam. My name is Tom Divis from St. Louis Missouri. Sam used to coach myself and another friend of mine Matthew Weiss. Both of us went to Lindenwood University in St. Charles. Sam volunteered his time to coach us in the shot put and discus throws. What an exceptional athlete and coach. He was so funny with his stories he used to tell us at practice. We had so much fun with Sam. We went to see him one time in Clayton at Morgan Stanley after we graduated in 2001. What a great individual, smart, funny, caring and loving. He will be greatly missed and we still talk about him. To the family of Sam and everyone who has been encounter with him may we remember the good times and generiousity he brought to us.

A couple of weeks have passed-Al and I are still thinking of Sam with heavy hearts and miss him. I'm sure we share these feelings with so many as Sam was such a special person and touched many lives. The world has lost a warm, funny, caring, trustworthy, intelligent, reputable, and generally all-around great guy. I guess we just hold tight to the memories and be thankful for the time he was a part of our lives. We'll keep his family and loved ones in our prayers.

Words are so difficult to find at such a heartbreaking time. Be at peace just as Sam is now. Let him be your personal guardian angel. Words can not express the depth of pain one feels when a loved one dies.
While we say the words "He was taken too soon," we must remember that he was taken in God's time. And as we continue to grieve, we too must remember that we will all be reunited in Heaven.
Sam was a great father, son, brother and friend. He made a difference in the lives of everyone he knew. We should all take a lesson from Sam's life and go forward in making a difference in the lives of others.

Joy, Sam, Kelly and Evan, you all have our deepest empathy and prayers. Evan, you will make it OK. Jim's Mom died when she was 41 and he was 9. Just take care of your Mom, Grandma Joy and Aunt Kelly. Especially, take care of them when they have extra money laying around needing to be spent on college tuition.
It was some of Sammy's advice on investments that helped pay for Willy's and Tess's education. It was Sam and Sammy that inspired Tess to stick with high school shot and discuss. We think the world of your family and appreciate the hopes and inspiration that your family has provided our family.

I've worked with Sam for his 15 years here & it's been an honor. He & I share the same passion for the outdoors so we frequently shared stories of our Deer hunts & adventures. If you ever heard him tell a story about one of his hunts --- you would see him Light up & always include the appropriate sound effects of the deer tip-toeing by his stand in the dark! Sam was my financial advisor for 14 years and he was very helpful when my mother died. He had a kind way of speaking to you on the phone and was always happy to fulfill your wishes without being pushy. I will miss him.

Sam, as we had often discussed, thank you again for our true brotherly friendship and becoming a most beloved spirit to Debbie and I.
