Edwin Shaffer Obituary

Edwin "Ed" Roy Shaffer passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at the age of 92 at Lowell General Hospital. Ed was the loving husband of the late Mildred J. (Fenton) Shaffer for 56+ years.

Born on August 09, 1929, in Boston, Edwin was the son of the late Roy and Muriel (Crossman) Shaffer. Raised and educated in Medford and Somerville, Ed attended Medford High School and graduated in 1947. After high school, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1948-1952. He met his love at a church function and married on June 27, 1954 at the First Universalist Church in Medford, Mass. Ed and Mildred began a family and moved from Medford to Littleton, Mass in 1967. While raising a family and working, Ed completed his degree in Electronic Engineering from Northeastern University in 1968. Ed continued to spend his remaining years in Littleton, Mass where he was a beloved community member.

Ed had a successful Engineering career working for Raytheon Corporation.

Ed was a lifelong learner and had an amazing appetite for gaining new information and was a voracious reader. He had a true love for Golf (playing, watching, and discussing it). He was a true Christian and active member of the Congregational Church of Littleton for 55 years. He was an active volunteer at Emerson hospital since 2012 where he volunteered over 3400 hours. He spent countless hours calling on friends and family, delivering food to food pantry and cooking for others at the church. He loved spending time with his family and friends (often involving coffee) and supporting his grandchildren at any event.

Edwin is survived by his children, John Shaffer and wife Lisa Midttun of Northborough, David Shaffer and wife Robin of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Peter Shaffer and wife Kristin of Portland, OR, and Nancy Monahan and husband Michael of Atkinson, NH. Ed is also survived by his six grand-children, Rachael Griffin, Caroline, Allison, and Owen Shaffer, Shane and Sydney Monahan, and his Great-grandson, Declan Griffin. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Catherine Shaffer of North Andover. In addition to his parents, Edwin is predeceased by his siblings, Robert and Jean Shaffer.

Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Edwin for a period of visitation on Tuesday, May 10th, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King Street, Littleton. Edwin's funeral service will take place on Wednesday, May 11th, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. in the Congregational Church of Littleton, 330 King Street, Littleton. Burial will follow with U.S. Navy Military Honors at Westlawn Cemetery.

I was Ed's choir director for four years. He was a very personable guy and always went out of his way to talk to people and see how things were going. I realize I'm a bit late, but I'm very sorry that he's no longer with us. I am sure God is taking good care of him.

Ed was a beloved member of the Tower Hill Botanic Garden community attending events on a regular basis. We loved seeing him and talking to him about his family of which he was so proud! What a dear, sweet man who was a wonderful conversationalist. We will miss his smiling face and cheerful demeanor. We have a very sweet photo of him from a recent event. Please email at [email protected] and I will send it along.

Dear John, Dave, Nancy and Peter,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all and your families! We had an awesome neighborhood to grow up in together. Everybody helped out with whatever the needs were with love for each other. I personally will remember both your parents as our extended family❤
I know your mom has welcomed him with a big hug and they are reuniting with my parents and neighbors.
Sending peace during this hard time!
Love, Gina & Brad Miller

I'll miss Ed - I noticed he wasn't at the last couple of Indian Hill Orchestra concerts, and he had always been there. Ed and I both played in the Groton Senior Golf League for many years, and I also used to see Ed at Emerson during the years the my parents were frequently there. Ed - always with a smile for everyone!

Ed was kind, friendly, positive, supportive, and genuinely interested in others. We will miss him dearly and the only saving grace to his passing is knowing that he and Millie are reunited in Heaven.

Uncle Ed, so glad I was able to spend time with you last summer. I'll watch for a sign from you (random golf ball, perhaps?) You will be missed and never forgotten. Sending my love to all - Ruth

Dear David and family,

Know my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of profound sorrow.

Your parents were salt of the earth people who profoundly loved their family. My parents, especially adored them.

I am certain your sweet mother's hands and hugs greeted your beloved Dad and will as they now are together for eternity. May your fond memories sustain you as you go through the next several days and thereafter.

What a blessing we had with such incredible parents. May they both fly high in the light of your love and the love of all who adore them.

Thinking of you and raising you all up with my deepest sympathy and intentions.

Peace,

Deb Karr-Francis
