Mark Engelhardt Obituary

Dr. Mark H. Engelhardt
Co-founder of Chelmsford Animal Hospital

CHELMSFORD -- Dr. Mark H. Engelhardt, 40, a resident of Chelmsford, and formerly of Gilford NH, passed away at his home on Sunday March 7, 2010, after a courageous year long battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Mark was the beloved husband of Dr. Patricia M. Hart, and devoted father to his two beautiful boys Grant and Hayden.

Born in Arlington Heights IL on July 27, 1969, he was the younger son of Devere C. and Ruth M. (Mossner) Engelhardt of Gilford NH, and brother of Michael Engelhardt and his wife Joanna of Charlestown MA.

Growing up in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Mark always enjoyed such outdoor activities as fishing, boating, and golfing. Also a spiritual person, he was a founding member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Laconia NH.

Mark received his elementary and secondary education in Gilford NH, and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at the University of New Hampshire. After graduation, Mark was determined to pursue his lifelong dream of practicing veterinary medicine. His aspiration led him to East Lansing Michigan where he became a Michigan State Spartan, graduating as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. He practiced emergency medicine for nine years before becoming a general practitioner and co-founder of the Chelmsford Animal Hospital.

Mark's family was truly his greatest treasure and legacy.

At a time in my life where I seem to be wrestling with trying to keep things in balance, the loss of a friend and classmate serves as a reminder of just what’s important and what really isn’t. Dr. Mark Engelhardt was a quiet but valued classmate from veterinary school. I was sorry to hear of his passing, especially at a very young age. He was 40 years old, the same age as me. Although we did not really remain in contact after veterinary school, this was still a very shocking loss. As I read Mark’s obituary, I realized that he lived his life to the fullest, not knowing that it would be cut tragically short. I send my heartfelt sympathy out to his family – his parents, his wife, his two young boys, and hope that they can treasure they time they had with him even at the same time they are struggling with the incredible grief over his passing.

“While goin’ the road to sweet Athy
A stick in me hand and a drop in me eye
A doleful damsel I heard cry,
Johnny I hardly knew ye.”

(from a traditional Irish song)

Mark, you will be missed, but we are glad for the time we had with you. In the sorrow of your passing, I find lessons to be learned, questions which can be answered (and questions which cannot), and I take added strength in my own daily battle to find focus and balance in my life. May you rest in peace, my friend.

There is a true, kind-heartedness about Mark that is indeed rare in this world. We all had the good fortune to experience it over the years—and see it in action as Mark channeled it through his family, friends, community and profession.

When I think of Mark, I am instantly taken to images of skiing and being at Gunstock—a place where we all spent a great deal of time during the winter months of our youth. On Sunday, the day he passed, the ski conditions in New Hampshire were like no other in recent memory. I checked in with a few friends around the region who were out skiing that day—and, by all reports, the ski areas were filled with clear, blue skies; an abundance of soft snow and sun; warm breezes and patio seating; smiling, laughter soaked faces; and, the ever illusive, no-waiting lift lines.

I can’t help but think that Mark had something to do with this perfect storm of conditions on the slopes on Sunday. We will miss you and your kind-heart, Mark. And, among the many memories you’ve given us over the years, we will think of you on every chairlift ride to the summit.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mark and the family at this time.

Your friend,
Gregg Cerveny

Grant and Hayden, I sincerely hope you will find comfort in your profound loss by the fact that so many people were touched by your father's life work. There was a special quality about him as he cared for our animals. As parents of similarly aged children, we often discussed our children during vet appointments. He was very proud of you. I hope that someday, when you re-read these notes, you are able to picture and emulate the man your father was. God Bless You

Today, as Dr. Engelhardt is laid to rest, tears of rain weep for our loss of such a caring human being, bringing new life and reminding us of a new life for Mark. I feel fortunate to have been the recipient of his kindness and he has left this world a better place by his examples of true humanity. Thank you, Dr. Engelhardt. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Engelhardt for raising a fine son. Sincere sympathy to his wife, children, family and friends.

I (only) knew Mark through my friend Tim James and his brother, Scott. In the last year of Mark's life, I vicariously became one of his friends. In this time frame, Tim constantly updated me about Mark's courageous battle with this insidious disease.

Along with this, Tim told me about who Mark was as a person. He also told me about the faithful and never-ending love and support of his wife Patricia, and Mark's immdeidate family. This has left me with a sense of loss and sorrow for both Mark's passing and, the fact that I never had a chance to meet him or his family.

My heart and deep condolences go out to Patrricia and Mark's family for their loss. The world was certainly a better place with him in it.

To Patricia & Sons, Ruth, Lee, Mike & Joanna I offer my deepest condolences. I have spent many years with Mark starting out when my family first moved to Gilford back in 1975. The Almond's and the Engelhardt’s always did things together. We shared so many wonderful times throughout our years, fishing for Trout opening day at Gilford Brook, ice fishing, fishing in general, skiing, ski racing, water skiing, boating, going to Gilford Beach, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, church confirmation, (we spent A LOT of time together when it came to church), and how can I forget all of the holidays we have spent together. Pool was always a favorite at Mark’s House. The list goes on. The one thing always consistent is that we had a blast at whatever we were doing. Mark had a heart of gold and would always do anything for anyone. He was an awesome friend and person that I will greatly miss. Let his spirit continue with us as we remember him.

Several years ago I had to bring my then 10 yr old son to have his dog put down. Dr. Engelhardt was the vet that handled our appointment. I just wanted to say I will never forget how sensitive and compassionate he was with my son. He handled my son with such understanding and patience as he was going thru such a terrific loss. Seven years later, David still remembers this vet. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Engelhardt family in their time of loss.

To Mark's family - I go back a lot of years and remember Mark at church and when I would join his parents, Ruth and Lee, at their home. I remember Mark as spirited and active. I wish I had more of an opportunity to know Mark as he set out on his own life as it sounds like he had a dream and set about achieving that and more. I loved hearing stories of what he was doing and I know his parents were so very proud of him. My heart goes out to you all. I know he will be missed by those who knew him well - furry friends included! I'm too far away to join with you for the service but know that I am with you in spirit.
