Mavis Goodwin Obituary

Mavis J. Goodwin
Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Aunt

LOWELL -- Mavis J. (Barden) Goodwin, 82, a longtime resident of Lowell, MA passed away peacefully Thursday, September 1, 2016 with her family by her side.

Mavis was the beloved wife of the late Fred R. Goodwin, living a life together for more than 58 years. Fred passed away on June 26, 2016.

She was born in Baltimore, MD on August 18, 1934, a loving daughter of the late Seth K. and Irene C. (Messerschmidt) Barden. Mavis received her education in the Billerica, MA schools, receiving her GED in 2000, an achievement she was very proud of.

She was the mother of 11 children, which she dedicated her life to raising.

Mavis enjoyed trips to the beach, seafood, loved going to the casino, watching old classic Westerns and movies with Daddy and the family. She loved country music, loved to dance (and boy, she could dance!) She enjoyed baking, and made some awesome birthday cakes. She was an icon at the Bridge Street Market Basket for 42 years and will be missed there. Mama overall just enjoyed being with ther family and going with the flow of the day.

Our mother was a kind, loving, caring and giving person; she had a heart of gold and saw the good in everything and everyone. She always had a beautiful smile on her face. She was a very special lady who held a special place of love in the hearts of all who knew her. We love you more, Mama, you are our best friend, our hero. You will be missed every day forever, by your family and all. Mama and Daddy are now enjoying a continuing life together in Heaven.

Mavis is survived by three sons, Fred Goodwin Jr., David Goodwin and Kevin Goodwin, all of Lowell; five daughters, Susan (Humes) Pagan and Dennis Kelley (her Irishman) of Pelham, NH, Karen and Frank Silva of Fitchburg, MA, Sharon Goodwin of Lowell, Carol and Michael Miyamoto of Hawaii, Darlene Goodwin and her fiancé Tony James of Lowell, MA; 11 grandchildren: Angela, Xen, Shawn, Susan, Frank Jr., Mitchell, Lena, Anthony, Keith, Brian and Kevin, Jr.; 11 great-grandchildren: Sydney, Anna, Natasha, Katie, Rachel, Shawn Jr., Jacob, Allison, Corie, Hayla and Nathan; two sisters, Patricia Hill of Chelmsford, MA and Carol Vaughan of Nashua, NH; one brother, Gilbert Barden of Lawrence, MA; a lifetime friend, Ed Poitras, who was like a son; and most of all her best kitty cat, Twinkie Toes.

She was also the mother of the late Patricia G. (Humes) Vurgaropulos, Ralph W. Goodwin, Robert J. Goodwin and son-in-law Leo Pagan, Jr.; and the sister of the late Reginald R. Barden, Kerwin S. Barden, Donald E. Barden and David K. Barden.

GOODWIN -- Family and friends may call Thursday, September 8, 2016 from 4 to 8 PM at the ARCHAMBAULT FUNERAL HOME, 309 Pawtucket Street, Lowell, MA. Mavis's funeral services will take place Friday morning at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will follow at the Lowell Cemetery. Donations in memory of Mavis may be made to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844. Funeral Director Victor J. Archambault, Jr. (978-459-9315.)

Mavis was one of my favorite customers when I worked at the post office. She was lovely in every aspect one could be. I am one of 11 kids and we had lots of laughs about our big families. My sincere condolences to all of the family and many friends whose lives she touched. A truly beautiful woman, inside and out.

To my best friend Mavis. I will miss your Christmas card at Christmas time. We have been friends for many years. You were my protector. You never let anyone hurt me. I will always remember walking to school together when there was a bus strike, listening to your country music through the woods, and staying at my house when there was a fire at your house. We had a lot of fun growing up. May you rest in peace. Love, your friend, Ann (Silva) Dodge
