Douglas Edward Sims, 69, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023.
Doug was born Feb. 26, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the third of three children of Irene and James Sims. Doug taught himself to draw at a young age and expressed himself artistically throughout his life. He always knew how to make those around him smile and laugh.
As a teacher he used his passion for young minds to inspire and encourage and would often be recognized by former students while out shopping to chat and reminisce. After having children of his own, he moved on to becoming a photographer, capturing many weddings, events and family portraits, continuing to serve his community with his creative talents. He served as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church.
Doug is survived by his sister, Francina; his former wife, Jan; and their children, Austin and Andrew.
He will be missed dearly each day.
His family is holding a memorial service at Coleman & Hicks Funeral Home from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023.

Doug and his wife bought their house when I worked at Sunshine Real Estate in the 80's. All these years later it makes me sad to know that he passed. His outstanding personality was one that made an unforgettable impression.

Mr. Sims was my drafting teacher at Barker Middle School. I remember missing the bus because he held us all responsible for ourselves and no one was leaving class until whatever it was, (can'tremember) happened. Anyway, over many years, I would run into him about town and we would always have small conversation. He was always kind and soft spoken and he had a great smile. Sending sympathy to his family and closest friends.

I was a member of the Landlord Association with Doug for many years. Remember meeting the 2 children when they were very young. Doug was a natural leader and helped us all in many ways. He would always be willing to share a thought or help solve a problem. Just lately I was involved in a proposed City Council ordinance against landlords, and Doug frequently went to the council meetings speaking on behalf of us landlords. I was also Doug's Realtor, and helped him whenever he had questions on the property or tax side. Doug always had a smile for everyone, we will all miss him.

We knew Mr. Sims as a teacher when we were in HighSchool. He always made sure to have a smile on his face and was friendly to the students. Even if he didn´t have you in class he tried to know everyone by name!! Our condolences to the family. God Bless

I had the pleasure of getting to know Doug through the Northwest Indiana Landlords Association. I am so sad to hear the news of his passing and only found out about it late this afternoon after receiving a text from a fellow landlord. It is with deepest sympathy that I send my thoughts and prayers to all of his family and friends. He certainly will be missed by all of us landlords. May God keep him and all of his loved ones in the palm of his hand.

I remember having him as a drafting arts teacher. He always had time for students no matter what he was doing at the time. He was an inspiration to this very young mind. Thank you, Mr. Sims and Godspeed
