John Clarence Shoop, 77, of La Porte passed away unexpectedly at 9:17 a.m., Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Northwest Health-Porter with family by his side.
His life story is a testament to his dedication, passion and the deep connections he formed with those around him. Born on May 24, 1947, in Canton, Illinois, to Willis Lee and Hazel Elizabeth (Eshelman) Shoop, John's early years were marked by a budding interest in engineering. Growing up on a farm, he found joy in dismantling and reassembling electronics, a hobby that set the foundation for his future career. By the age of 7, he had already decided on his path. His academic journey led him to the University of Illinois, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1970.
John's professional career began with designing air compressors at Gardner/Denver in Quincy, Illinois. He married Vicki Young, who survives, on Sept. 14, 1975, in Cuba, Illinois. A few years later the couple moved to Indiana after John accepted a position at Joy Manufacturing in Michigan City. His expertise continued to grow, leading him to Sullair in 1980, where he worked until his retirement in 2009. Retirement, however, did not dampen his passion for engineering; instead, it spurred him to establish Shoop Companies, a consulting firm designing and manufacturing industrial valves for the industry he loved. John's vast knowledge and unwavering honesty made him a highly sought-after consultant, turning many professional relationships into lifelong friendships.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John's love for his family was paramount. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, often showing his affection through acts of service. Whether coaching sports, attending games, or simply being present, John always prioritized his family. His grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Papa," were a source of immense joy, and he cherished the time spent watching them play. In retirement, John found companionship in his dog, Coby, and his cat, Marms. John and Coby walked the neighborhood daily; Marms was never far behind.
John was a member of State Street Church in La Porte, and his faith shaped his strong values. John's kind, steady presence will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
John is also survived by his children, Jacob (Misuzu) Shoop of Tokyo, Japan, Rebekah (Michael) Boardman of La Porte, Indiana, and Elizabeth (Michael) Marzotto of Indianapolis, Indiana; sister, Carolyn (Gary) Jacobus of Cuba, Illinois; grandchildren, Kayon Shoop, Owen, Grant and Theo Boardman, and Jack and Luca Marzotto; his dog, Coby; and his cat, Marms.
John was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jack Shoop.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, 219-362-3100 with a Time of Reflection and Sharing starting at 3 p.m.

My deepest condolences to the John Shoop family. News of John´s death rocked my world. Memories of John, Carolyn, Jack, Willis & Hazel came flooding back. We were toddlers together separated by a fence with holes in it. We spent hours playing & growing up together. Shoop´s moved away & John was probably the only person in the Cuba HS class of 1965 to go to a one room school.
Both of our families moved to a farm, joined 4H, raised sheep, & attended Cuba grade & HS. We were off to college & on with our lives. Although we saw each other basically at class reunions, you have always been in my thoughts and heart.
You helped shape my life.
One of the good guys, John.
May God bless your family.
I will miss you always.

Sincerest condolences to the Shoop family. John was an institution in the world of rotary screw compressor technology & innovation. A class act, nice man, & consummate professional all the way. Sure he displayed the same attributes with his family and friends too! I know he fulfilled his mission as God intended and know he is in his loving arms & looking down from up above. John was a force of nature just like the compressed air he designed... God Bless & Sincerest Condolences, Ray Rasnack & Family-Medina, OH.

Vary sad. I have not seen John in a while and now will be truly missed. He was my first boss at Joy MFG. back in 78 and 79 when I was still in High School. Then a few years later he was my boss, friend and mentor at Sullair for many years. Will miss him but not the memories. RIP.

My condolences to the entire Shoop family. John will be missed in so many ways by so many people. He truly was one of the good people in the world. I have know him for 39 years since he hired me out of college. He was not only my boss, but a mentor and a friend. I learned many things from him, but that was only a fraction of all the knowledge he had. I will miss him dearly.

John was a good man. I had the pleasure of getting to know John when we worked togetherat the #9 coal mine outside of Cuba. We had some good youthful times over several summers.
John was unfailingly kind to others and the world could use more John Shoops, not fewer. I finish with the words I started with, John was a good man. Bill Churchill
