Joyce Eleanor Stark, a cherished matriarch and a beacon of love and dedication, passed away peacefully on Feb. 26, 2026, at The Elms of Michigan City.
Born on Dec. 31, 1935, in Michigan City, Joyce's life was a tapestry of commitment to her family, her work and her community.
Joyce's journey began as the beloved daughter of Edward Blair and Harriet Jones, both of whom preceded her in death.
Her early years in Michigan City laid the foundation for a life full of love, laughter and service. Joyce's heart found its match in Allen A. Stark Jr., with whom she shared a beautiful marriage from May 18, 1957, until his passing on Sept. 11, 2007. Together, they navigated life's seas, finding joy in each other's company on numerous cruises and in the simple pleasures of everyday life.
A devoted mother, Joyce's legacy lives on through her three daughters, Debbie Moore, Marsha (Steve) Norris and Amy (Mark) Shebel. Her nurturing spirit extended to her grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) Combs, Ryan (Michelle) Moore, Jacob (Kiawna) Hamlin, Kaley and Kelsey Norris, Meagan (Shaun) Connley, Alex Shebel and Katelyn (Anthony) Wray; and great-grandchildren, Cody, Conner, Laney, Desmond, Cooper, Lucas, Eleanor and Maverick, each of whom she adored and supported with unwavering pride.
Joyce's professional life was marked by a remarkable 24-year tenure at the Michigan City School Bus Garage, where she began as secretary to the director and later ascended to the role of Director of Transportation. Her dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of countless children on their journeys to and from school was a testament to her caring nature. Joyce's commitment to service continued for 18 years as a unit clerk for Cardiac Services at St. Anthony Hospital, where her compassion touched the lives of many.
Beyond her professional achievements, Joyce was known for her love of cross-stitching, bingo, bunco and cards. She was a formidable opponent at the bowling alley and cherished the moments spent with family above all else. Her interests and hobbies were avenues through which she expressed her love and formed lasting bonds with friends and family.
Joyce's life was one of loving dedication. Her warm presence and kind-heartedness were the threads that wove her family together. She was the epitome of a loving individual, whose generosity of spirit and unwavering support were her greatest gifts to those who knew her.
Joyce's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those she touched, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire. As we remember Joyce Eleanor Stark, we celebrate a life beautifully lived, a journey of love and a legacy of caring that will be cherished forever.
