Send FlowersKathleen E. Nicholson, 87, of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, 2026, at the Residence of Coffee Creek.
Born on Nov. 22, 1938, in Chesterton to James and Margaret (Maroney) Earley. On Nov. 23, 1963, she married Norman Nicholson and they have been together through thick and thin for 63 years. Kathleen was referred to "Murphy" to many of her family and friends.
Kathleen was the heart of her family. She is survived by her husband, Norman; her cherished daughters, Lisa Beckley, Kelly (Tim) Charles and Michelle Nicholson; and her grandchildren, Samantha (Courtney), Aaron (Lauren) and Jeremy, who brought her pride and joy. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her four sisters, Mary, Patricia, Cecilia and Margie; and her four brothers, Jim, Martin, Denis "Butch" and Paul.
Kathleen was a lifelong and active member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church. Her faith guided her daily life – in her kindness, her humility and her unwavering commitment to serving others. She volunteered at Franciscan Health and at St. Mary's Thrift Shop, always finding quiet ways to give back.
Kathleen worked for many years as a legal secretary in Chicago and Michigan City before retiring, but her greatest joy was always her family. She was a diehard Chicago sports fan (Bears, Bulls and Cubs), who especially loved March Madness, and nothing meant more to her than time spent with those she loved.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 6, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, with Rev. Jordan Fetcko officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church prior to Mass. Arrangements have been entrusted to Root Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Foundation.
Kathleen touched many lives. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
