Phanara Sok, 81, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2021. He died peacefully at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, Indiana, with his beloved wife and daughters by his side.
He is survived by his wife, Lyvan Sok; daughter, Sylvana; daughter, Samantha and her husband, Tim; and granddaughter, Dylan.
Phanara was born on March 8, 1940, in Bati, Takeo province, Cambodia, to Thuch Chan and Phath Sok. He emigrated from Cambodia to the U.S. as a refugee in 1975, during the fall of Phnom Penh to the Khmer Rouge regime. On his way to the U.S., he met the love of his life, Lyvan, and later convinced her to move from Olympia, Washington, to settle in Michigan City with him – they married and were inseparable for more than 45 years; they even worked together at TP Orthodontics in La Porte, Indiana, their entire careers.
Phanara, known as "Bo" to his loved ones, loved spending time with family and friends and was the life of the party. He was a strong patriarch, a great friend to all, and a man who would give the shirt off his back for someone in need.
He was a wonderful father who did all he could to teach and guide his children, as well as a proud grandfather to his beloved granddaughter, Dylan. He is loved and will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at a later time. Arrangements have been entrusted to Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St., Michigan City, IN, 46360.

I met Phanara shortly after they arrived in the area and we were fortunate enough to hire both he and Lyvann at TPO. They could always be counted on to do their best.
I will never forget (and have told it often) he arrived at my front door all excited which made the English more difficult, handing me a brown paper bag and all he said was “I have live crap for you from Washington DC trip. I said thanks and he was gone. I took the live CRAB that were trying to get out to my Mothers and we cooked and ate them.
Always enjoyed him.
