Robert Joseph Kroll succumbed to complications from Parkinson's disease on June 23, 2023, at Ascension Living/Resurrection Place in Park Ridge, Illinois.
He was born on Sept. 14, 1945, to John Kroll and Clara (nee Widelski) Kroll in Michigan City, Indiana. Immediately upon graduating from St. Bonaventure Seminary in 1963, Robert entered the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor and remained a member until 2008.
The following year he married Darlene (nee Hula) Tully, a special education teacher in Milwaukee and Chicago. She preceded Robert in death in 2018.
While a member of the Franciscans, Robert became an ordained priest in 1972, earned master's degrees in divinity and special education from Marquette University, taught at special education schools, was an elementary and high school administrator, and served as superintendent of Catholic education for the Archdiocese of St. Petersburg, Florida, from 1992 to 2001.
In 2009, he accepted an administrative position with the Illinois State Board of Education to oversee compliance in the areas of special needs students. He retired in 2018 as supervisor of special education services in the Chicago Office.
Throughout his years of service, Robert's passion for education shone brightly. He tirelessly worked to inspire others, nurturing spiritual growth and understanding within several parishes. His wisdom and warmth made him a sought-after confidant, counselor and friend to those in need. His religious and educational legacies live on in the countless lives he touched, the spirits he lifted and the love he shared with his family, friends, parishioners and all fortunate enough to have known him.
Robert is survived by a sister, Joan Sadlowski of Tampa, Florida; and a brother, James Kroll of Denver. He was fond of his four nephews, five grandnephews and two grandnieces.
A graveside service open to all family and friends will be conducted at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery (Section 63, Block 5), 7201 Archer Ave., Justice, Illinois, at noon on Sept. 14.
Please consider donating to the Make-A-Wish Foundation (secure2.wish.org) in Robert's name.
