To Billy's wife, children and sisters. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Billy's passing. I hadn't spoken to him since 1984 but he left a great impression on all those who knew him.
Every so often you cross paths with someone who has the ability to argue a point with passion and not come off as sounding arrogant, mean spirited or self absorbed. It is an even rarer person who can do such and take it to the next level, the end result of which is to actually endear himself to you and others. Billy was that rare person. His intellect, was matched by the kindness of his heart heart and great sense of humor. He was so easy to,like.
On one hand I am envious of those students who were blessed to have him as their mentor. I know that he had to be a great teacher and one who truly made a difference in peoples' lives. Every student needs a professor Monkman. On the other hand I have such good memories of this man we called "Billy" and for the short time that I was able to call him my friend I am thankful simply for that. This world needs more people like Billy. "Genesis"...

To Lori and all your children: My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. I am among the many who was shocked by the very sad news of his passing. He will be remembered as a colorful and very expressive man with whom I always enjoyed working. His passion for his work and life in general came through in every conversation.

Lori, I am so sad for your family's loss. Bily was unique in this world, and it is sadder, darker with a touch less passion with him gone. He was one of the first people I met at Emory & Henry and he remained a good friend for over 20 years. Stu and my thoughts are with you and the children.

I too knew Billy from Emory and Henry college in Virginia. I remember him well--not only for his incredible intellect, impassioned ideology, and sense of humor, but also for his wonderful teaching skills. He was my Spanish lab teacher for 2 years and pushed us hard to understand and love his native language. I am so very sorry for his loss.

Lori:
As a matter of circumstance, I rarely bridge "The Gap" but I was so exceptionally stunned by Guillermo's passing that I could not let his death occur without some notation (even if it is somewhat pitifully lamented).
As my brother died of a sudden cardiac arrest two months ago I only have an inkling of what you are experiencing. The reverberations both physically and emotionally are devastating. I cannot express my deepest condolences any further than my sorrow over his death and my unexpressed joy for having known Guillermo.
His "Ridiculous" and other colloquialisms will be remembered for a (my) lifetime.
Once again, I am so sorry for your tragedy. I will remember Guillermo and keep him in my thoughts.

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children...to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
I saw this posted on the refrigerator at Guillermo's home and thought to myself how appropriate. I do believe he accomplished all these things and MORE! He loved his family and was a good husband and father! He will be missed and will live on in our hearts and memories forever! Rest in peace Guillermo, we love you!

I first met Guillermo (Billy in those days) back in 1982. We were both freshmen at E&H College. He was new to the US (he would correct me if I said “new to America”) and I was new to life outside Southeast Kentucky. It was not long before he was my closest friend and remained so for long after school was over. He was “best man” in my wedding in 94. In the end, he became one of those lifelong friends where no matter how much time has passed since you last saw one another, you pick up right where you left off as if no time had passed at all.
I remember the Christmas and Easter breaks he spent with my family because Argentina was too far to return to. I remember the thousands of hours spent playing D&D & war games, or debating politics & world events. I remember summer term in 86 when we watched Argentina win the World Cup and played soccer on the lawn in front of the Yellow House. I remember that he gave me my first cigarette (c.1983) and then did not hesitate to lecture me on the need to quit (c.2001). I remember the long trips between Richmond and Blacksburg (and later Columbia, SC and Las Vegas, NV) that each of us took to visit the other (the last in 2007). I remember his love of music and his soft spot for animals. I remember that he taught me that the world was a much bigger place than what I thought it was. But most of all I remember how he treated me like a brother, always watching out for me, always ready with advice (not always welcome), and always with my best interest in mind.
I weep at his loss. I rejoice that his life touched mine!

Billy was the most imitated man on the campus of Emory & Henry. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. This could not be any truer when talking about Billy. He was well liked by such a diverse group of people. He was a passionate and caring individual. I'll never forget rooming with him in Addisons. Lori, me, my wife, and daughters send our love.

I knew Billy from Emory & Henry College in VA. I loved him for his sense of humor and passionate speeches. He helped teach me the art of the argument. (He always won.) I will hold my memories of him in my heart always.

I don't even know where to begin to convey all the good things I know about Guillermo. He was a colleague of mine at the College of Southern Nevada for eight years. I never saw him in a bad mood, nearly always smiling and often telling a funny story. I served with him on several committees and, as our lead faculty member, he took on a lot of burdens that would otherwise be mine. I will always be grateful and always be an admirer of his tireless energy, dedication, and his willingness to always be helpful. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends (of which he had many).
