Coach Pitts Obituary

Coach Dan Pitts
August 1, 1932 - April 20, 2021
Forsyth, Georgia -
Arthur Dan Pitts passed away peacefully on April 20, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born in Lincoln County, GA, the oldest child and only son of Isabelle Cartledge Pitts and Arthur Andrew Pitts. He graduated from Lincolnton High School where he enjoyed playing football and baseball for the Red Devils. During his senior year, he was named All State Quarterback. His athletic ability helped him earn a football scholarship to South Georgia College. He completed his education at the University of Georgia, graduating in 1959. During his stint in the U.S.Army, he served in the 8457th Military Police.
In 1957, he married the love of his life, Mary Lynda Stevenson, who was also from Lincolnton. In 1959, having no previous coaching experience, he became the head coach at Mary Persons High School, where he remained for his entire career. He always said he had the best job in the world because he was allowed to do what he loved in a place he loved. Under his leadership, throughout the 39 year career at Mary Persons, his teams compiled 346 wins, 109 losses and 4 ties. The Bulldogs won 15 Region championships and made 4 appearances in the state finals, winning the AA State Championship with an undefeated season in 1980. In 1996, he became the "Winningest Coach in Georgia High School History," with 316 wins.
Known throughout the state for his fairness and integrity, Coach Pitts was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame. He often said that his membership in the local Hall of Fame meant the most because it involved every player he had ever coached. He was awarded the Atlanta Falcons Lifetime Achievement Award, and the GACA Dwight Keith Award. He was also awarded, by the Atlanta Touchdown Club, the Class AA Georgia High School Coach of the Year Award in 1980 and 1984, and the Georgia High School State Coach of the Year Award in1994. One of his proudest moments was in 2001 when the stadium at Mary Persons was named Dan Pitts Stadium at Mitchell Field.
Coach Pitts was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lynda Stevenson Pitts. He is survived by his daughters; Carolann Pitts Evans (Deck) and Penny Pitts Mitchell (Bob); his grandchildren; Anni Evans Horne (Derek), Carl Patrick Burdette, Jr., (Sara), and Daniel Pitts Burdette (Chelsea); his great-grandsons; Andrew Pitts Horne, Brantley Vinson Horne, and Skylar Daniel Burdette; sisters; Gail Pitts Guillebeau and Ann Pitts Owens both of Augusta, GA; sister-in-law, Carolyn Stevenson Link (Bradey) of Cayce, SC; many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, "Rags."
Besides his family members, he is survived by the many coaches and players he had the pleasure to work with throughout his career. The family hopes each individual realizes what an impact he had in the life of Coach Pitts.
Services will be held Friday, April 23, 2021. Graveside in Forsyth City Cemetery at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mary Persons Touchdown Club PO Box 5791 or Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame PO Box 457, Forsyth, GA 31029.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

Penny, Carolann and family,
I have such fond memories of your father during our visits down south.
He was a consistently consistent man of few words! You were fortunate to have had him so close for so long. His coaching career was impressive but, his biggest win is the “all star “ family he raised. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Prayers are with each one of you , Coach was beyond measure, raised many a young person not his own blood and raised a wonderful family as an everlasting legacy. May his memory go on forever.

Mr. Pitts taught me biology in the 10th grade at Mary Persons (in 1959-60). I remember that he'd get one of his football players to stand in front of the class, and we would have to name the bone or muscle that he was pointing to with his yard stick. But what I came to admire most about him was that he did not think of a job at Mary Persons as merely a step to something grander. He valued teaching young people how to become responsible and use their skills well. And he valued the opportunity to do that in a small town more than he valued the bright lights of bigger fields of play. In many ways he was a good example.

Coach Pitts was the brother my Dad, Jimmy HIghtower, never had. They were as close as if they were actual siblings. I can only imagine the times they had on their Spring trips to Alabama and other schools to watch practices and talk with coaches. Of course, they always ended up at the Masters. From about 2005-2010, they came and stayed with me in Atlanta, to play in Roger Kaiser's charity celebrity golf tournament. We would always have dinner when they got into town, and it was an evening of them telling stories and getting jabs at one another.... and they really enjoyed it. (So DID I!).
Coach Pitts was a credit to his profession. He had integrity, principals, and would not be swayed from the things he believed in. I know he influenced hundreds, or thousands, of young people during his many years at Mary Persons. He is the one coach that I ever saw who could consistently compete with players of lesser physical talent against teams with superior athletes, and win. He used to tell me that he loved coaching practices, much more than he did the games, which tells a lot about the type of coach and person he was.
This world has never had enough good people. Today the deficit is greater by one. But a lot of us are better for having to be able to know him.
Tell my Dad "Hello" when you see him, Coach. I know you've got some stories to tell him, again.
Our deepest condolences to all his family and loved ones.

He approached me at age 12 n said I want you to start training for QB. But you have to promise me to stay out trouble n never make a grade below B n I said I give you my word n the rest is history. Accomplishing 2 of his 5 (10-0) seasons ! High morals, integrity, perfectionist, disciplinarian, no special treatment ( except when getting my ankles tape for game night , no one was allowed to tape me but him ) , words aren’t sufficient to acknowledge his impact on us ALL !! Love you Coach n you will be dearly missed but NEVER FORGOTTEN !! Your legacy lives on through each n everyone of US

Coach Pitts taught Drivers Education when I was in High School. I have never forgotten the time I got so tickled at my driving partner that I had to bury my face in the back seat. Coach Pitts had a rule that you couldn't laugh at anyone learning to drive. The look on his face was so funny when my partner cranked the car with the gas pedal down to the floor...I couldn't contain my laughter. Just one of those memories that I'll never forget. Sending my sympathy and prayers to the family.

Carolann, Penny and family, I am sad to hear of Coach Pitts’s passing. I am so happy to have known him and cherish my memories of him. I was just telling someone the other day about him bringing me a biology book after having my third child and then before that, he followed me all the way to Gray one day because he was worried I might have that baby on the side of the road. Needless to say, I thought the world of him.
He was a wonderful influence on so many over the years and leaves a huge legacy.
May God bless you with peace and comfort during this difficult time. Love you all❤❤

Carolann, Penny, grandkids, and family, please accept our deepest condolences at this time . For as long as I can remember Coach Pitts has been a positive influence in our lives. Being a longtime close friend of my daddy’s , later in life I was fortunate enough to see the funny side of him. After my father passed in 2000 , he shared many stories of their adventures together. He always made me laugh. I think of all the young men’s lives he influenced through coaching, and teaching at Mary Persons. That number has to be as high as any other person that one can think of. He was such a positive influence in my life that we named our second son after him. Forsyth is a better place because of Coach Dan Pitts and everyone who knew him will agree with that fact. May Our Lord Jesus Christ help you all through the toughest of times. God bless you all.

Carolann, Penny, and family
I am so very sorry to learn of his passing.
What phenomenal memories you have to cherish and pass on for generations.
My family was so involved with MP football. My parents would drive the busses to the games. Also charter busses for away games. To witness the dynasty that was Coach Pitts & the Bulldogs.
Dick & Hank both played for him.
Coach taught me Drivers Ed. He had the Telegraph, something to drink, and WDEN.
May the love and prayers that surround you and your family today and time to come be of comfort.
