Thomas Curry Obituary

Thomas Andrew Curry, Jr. -DUBLIN, GA - Thomas Andrew Curry, Jr. was born September 10, 1921, in Dublin, Georgia. He was Chairman of the Board of The Curry Companies. Mr. Curry was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Walker Curry, and his son, Thomas Andrew Curry, III. Mr. Curry passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. -He is survived by two daughters, Dedie Curry Maffett of Dublin and Ruth Curry (George) Turner of Alpharetta. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Andrea Curry (Joey) Wheeler of Martinez, Michael (Natalie) Maffett of Dublin, Tom Maffett of Atlanta, Andrew Turner, George Turner, Jr., and Frances Turner of Alpharetta. Mr. Curry is survived by four great-grandchildren, Matthew Wheeler, Amanda Wheeler, Davis Maffett and Charlie Maffett. He was assisted by his caregivers and guardian angels, Gwen Arline, Evelyn Johnson and Annie Ruth Stanley. -After graduating from Dublin High School, attending Georgia Southern University, and serving in World War II, Thomas returned to Dublin in 1946 to join his older brother Louie in the family real estate and insurance business started by his father Thomas A. Curry, Sr. He and his brother expanded the business into real estate development and home building. Thomas always had the attitude that it can be done, and because of that there are many residential communities and commercial buildings that bear his mark. He loved his home town and devoted his life to making Dublin and Laurens County a better place to live as evidenced by his sixty-four active years in the real estate and insurance business. He loved entertaining his friends and the entire community at his Palmetto Farm. Throughout his life, he was blessed with longtime devoted associates including: Joyce Mullis, 55 years, Lina Hogan 47, and Becky Meeks, 40 years, as well as long-time business partners Mike Maffett and Louie Curry, Jr. -As a community leader he served on the Board of Directors of the Dublin-Laurens Chamber of Commerce, Dublin/Laurens County Development Authority, Downtown Development Authority, Board of Directors of the Citizens and Southern Bank, and the Dublin Board of Realtors. In 1999, Georgia Southern University honored Thomas as Alumnus of the Year, Private Enterprise. -Thomas was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Explorer's Sunday School Class. Pallbearers will be Ben Hall, Tom Hall, Johnny Vaughn, Ferrell Nichols, Ed Roche, Wallace Miller, Johnny Warren and Scott Thompson. The employees of The Curry Companies will serve as honorary pallbearers. -Funeral services will be Friday, October 22, 2010 at the First Baptist Church Family Center at 11A.M. with Dr. Jack Key and Dr. Cliff Morris officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sanctuary Window Renovation Fund at First Baptist Church, 405 Bellevue Avenue, Dublin, GA 31021. Thomas Curry
