Herbert E. Leiting

MADISON - Herbert E. Leiting, age 73, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Meriter Hospital. He was born on Dec. 18, 1950, in Oak Park, Ill., the son of Russel and Dolores (Kingsley) Leiting. Herb graduated from Irving Crown High School in Carpentersville, Ill., in 1968, and from UW-Whitewater in 1972. He married Cynthia (Kowalke) Leiting on April 22, 1972, in Whitewater.
Herb worked in the IT consulting field as the owner and operator of Phoenix Consulting, Inc. and was much revered by his employees and clients. He took pleasure in listening to music and playing guitar; fishing in the Boundary Waters, Lake Michigan and Canada; playing baseball in high school and other sports with friends, including racquetball, tennis, basketball, softball and golf; and defeating his friends at games like cards, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and cribbage. He enjoyed backpacking through Europe, flying to island beaches, attending destination weddings, spending weekends in Door County, and visiting family and friends throughout the U.S. He especially enjoyed reading with a cat sitting comfortably on his chest. Herb was a kind, generous and funny husband, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle and friend.
Herb is survived by his wife, Cindy; sister, Eva (Frank) Latino; sisters-in-law, Debbi (Greg) Verheyen, Beth (Dennis) Baier and Amy (Bruce) Kowalke-Laabs; nieces, Michelle Verheyen, Katie (Bryan) Muncy, Amanda Laabs and Alyssa Laabs; nephews, Tim (Kate) Verheyen, Chris Verheyen, Jason (Ashley) Verheyen, Michael (Tara) Baier, Brian (Megan) Verheyen, Justin (Holly) Karrels, David Baier, John (Jenny) Latino and John Baier; as well as great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Herb's life will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to thank the staff at UW Hospital, Meriter Hospital, and UW Rehab Hospital, for their compassionate care and support of Herb.
