Karen Elizabeth Muench

September 5, 1941 - January 17, 2026

MADISON - With sorrow, we announce that after a brief illness, Karen Elizabeth Muench, 84, passed away on January 17, 2026, in Madison, Wis., with family and friends at her side. Karen was a strong-willed woman of formidable intellect who lived her life entirely on her own terms. Born in Green Bay, Wis., on September 5, 1941, to Elizabeth (Kaftan) and George Muench, she moved to Madison for her Bachelor of Arts in Education degree she earned in 1963.

Karen stayed in Madison where she raised her two children, BJ and Michele, for two decades. She earned a Ph.D. in Adult Education in 1985 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and taught for many years at UW-Oshkosh until she retired in 2002.

Karen was a watercolor artist and created whimsical folk-art paintings, especially after she retired to Silver City, N.M. Karen treasured her grandchildren, and mourned the loss of her daughter, Michele, who took her own life in 2010. She is survived by her adult child, BJ Allen; grandchildren, Jennifer and Jeffrey Hage; brother, Jim Muench; sisters, Jan Christensen and Marilyn Shairer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family held a small burial ceremony at the Natural Paths Sanctuary in Verona, Wis., on February 5, 2026. There will be a celebration of life held in Madison in the summer of 2026.
