Robert "Dober" Dobson
May 30, 1944 - November 13, 2024
When your great-uncle was a driver for Al Capone, your life was destined for adventure. Robert "Dober" Dobson, 80 of Muscoda, WI ended his storytelling November 13, 2024. He was born May 30, 1944, in Madison, WI. He was the son of Robert and Shirley (Chase) Dobson.
Dober loved many things: pretty girls, fast cars and making memories to last a lifetime. Dober grew up in Madison, WI where his passion for cars began. He and a few good buddies started a car club, "The Eliminators" in the 60s. It was here that a lifetime of friendship was made. They would often meet at Rusty's before dragging down University Avenue, only to outrun the cops a time or two! The stories of shenanigans and racing are still heard today.
Dober started a glazing apprenticeship at Brunke Glass to help pay for his drag racing obsession in his early 20's. Over time, Dober traded in his top-fuel nitro dragster for a family car. He was married to Harriet Briggs of Monona, WI and had two children whom he was crazy about. He left Madison and bought a farm to provide a quieter and safer life for his family. He farmed his land, raised cattle and continued his glazing career by running a business, Country Glass, out of the barn. He was married twice and engaged a few more times. And while he may have never married the love of his life, he never gave up looking.
After his farming career ended, he began commuting to Madison when working for Klein-Dickert. Dober was worked on many projects in the Madison area, but his proudest work was being a part of building the Overture Center. He would love to take friends and family members to various events to show off his craftmanship.
He retired from his glazing career while working for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dober formed more amazing friendships while working for the UW. Those who rode the rideshare van looked forward to hearing Dobers stories and they would all laugh on their ride into work.
Dober had a great retirement! He mastered his carpentry skills by adding on to his home as well as renovating a home with his daughter. He ran a successful VRBO called "Dobers Place" for many years. He loved to travel whenever he could. He visited Africa, the Caribbean, and many places state side. His favorite place to travel would always be to Las Vegas for the NHRA drag races and of course, an annual trip on Route 66 to Oatman, Arizona.
He was a proud member of Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) and eventually became a sponsor to others in need. Dober was a lifetime member of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). He was also a lifelong member of Glaziers Local 941.
Dober leaves behind his daughter, Jerilynn (Dave) Bartnick of Lodi, WI; a son Bob Dobson of Muscoda, WI; brother Daniel (Joan) Dobson of Houston, TX; granddaughter, Olivia Bartnick of Lodi, WI; nieces and nephews; friends Billy Winner, Charlie Gehin, Mike Ball, his doppelganger Willie Nelson and his 'best-buddy dog', Benny.
Dober was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Dobson, Shirley Rutlin, +brother Michael Dobson and dear friends including Sam Kever and Tom Haag.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the Pratt Funeral Home, Muscoda from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM with a time of sharing to be held at 3:00 PM.
