Roger E. Rowland
June 13, 1945 - Oct. 19, 2023
JEROME - Roger E. Rowland born June 13, 1945, in Stockton, CA, lost his battle with Alzheimer's on October 19, 2023, in his home in Jerome, Idaho, at the age of 78.
Roger fought his first battle at the age of 19 when he was drafted and sent to Vietnam. He turned 21 while stationed there.
He began his lifelong career as a heavy equipment operator, working with his father and brother Earl. Later he joined the Operating Engineer's Local Union #3. Both his sons followed in his footsteps as heavy equipment operators. Along with his son-in-law, John Malenke, and his grandson Kenny, who both currently are with Operating Engineers Local #3.
Roger used to tell his friends and family that there was a woman who would love him the way he needed to be loved. He said that she lived in Idaho and for some reason he felt she lived in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. However, he only made it as far as Twin Falls, Idaho when he fell madly in love on July 5, 1983. They were married on October 3, 1983. Together they raised their 5 children in the Reno/Sparks area. And in 2009 they moved to Jerome, Idaho, where his wife was born.
He was a huge NASCAR fan, and his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Sr. After retiring Roger enjoyed hunting with his in-laws, fishing and exploring new places in Idaho with his grandchildren, tinkering, enjoying time with new friends, Dick, Allen and Bill (who made Roger's urn). He also enjoyed restoring the other love of his life, "Ole Orange" a 1969 Ford pickup.
Roger was proceeded in death by his parents, Roger Earl Rowland, Wayne and Peggy Hedden. His brother Earl, two of Earl's sons, Rick and Mark. His sisters, Debbie Nelson and Nina Lovelock, along with Nina's son. His nephew, Jimmy Guenza and his grandson, Roger Edward Rowland III.
He is survived by his honey, Velma; children, Rodney and Susan Rowland, both in Reno, NV, Douglas Shepherd of Pocatello, ID, and Rosie and John Malenke in Sparks, NV. 7 grandchildren, Krissy, Tristen, Nannie, Zack, Cheyanne, James, and Lola. 1 great-grandson, Kyler along with one brother and sister.
His family would like to give special thanks to Bayleigh, Sharon, and Anahi from Heritage Home Health and Hospice for their excellent loving care that they gave to both Roger and his family for the last months of his life.
There will be a get together for all his family and friends at his home on November 11, 2023 at 5:00 pm.
