Donald Whitten Obituary

GARDINER -- Donald R.P. Whitten, 42, died unexpectedly Friday, May 27, 2011, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born on March 24, 1969, a son of the late Perley L. and Constance J. (Rodrigue) Whitten.

Mr. Whitten was a 1987 graduate of Hall-Dale High School and attended Mid-State College.

Don was famously known for his big heart, his bear hugs, his million funny jokes, his contagious smile and his forever greeting, "Hey, how's it doing?" He was a much loved person. His children were his total excitement in life. Teaching them about life was what he found to be so endearing. Whether he was boating, camping or fishing, Don was at his best. Family and friends were so important to him. He will be greatly missed.

Whitten, of Gardiner; his former brother-in-law, Paul M. Heron, of Chelsea; as well as several aunts and uncles and cousins.

Following cremation, a graveside service will be held on Monday, June 6, at 2 p.m. in Hallowell Cemetery, Water Street, Hallowell. Following the service, a gathering of family and friends will take place at the Gardiner Sportsman's Club, 154 Cobbossee Ave., Gardiner.

To all the Whitten Family:

I am so sorry that Don has passed away so early in life and you are all in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. He was a good person with a heart of gold and he was loved by many people. You can take comfort in knowing that he is in a better place now with his mom and dad and I'm sure that he'll be watching over each and every one of you, especially his daughters that he loved so much.

I will always remember his smile and that "Whitten laugh" and I will always treasure the big *hugs* he gave me every time we happened to cross paths. Rest in peace Don, I love you.

Always, Jeannine

I was deepley saddened to learn of Don's death while I was volunteering in India. On the flight home I remembered Don having a huge heart and a jovial attitude with everyone he met. On occasion he would call my mother to chat or email me and reminisce about the high school days when he actually had hair. :) He always talked about his family that he loved very much and that I need to start my own family because I was getting old. Don you will be greatly missed by many people. May you rest in 'Peace.'

A great childhood friend and classmate. I remember all the fun times we had up in the woods catching salamanders in the stream and building forts with tree branches. Those were the carefree days of our youth and I am glad I got to spend a lot of those days with you.
Rest in Peace, old friend.

I met you at age 11 and we were best friends. I will always remember the countless adventures; playing on the river ice, building tree cabins, motorcycles, sleepovers, sledding, skiing, swimming at the quarry, guitar, delivering papers, camping, boating… We did everything together for many years. A part of you is forever with me. Rest in peace my friend.

You'll always be remembered for the love you had for everyone, especially for the family and especially for your children. The way you had a zest for life and always making everyone around you laugh and feel good about being themselves. My fondest memories of you was when you'd play the guitar usually while wrapped up with a blanket sitting on the milk crate with the red cushion wrapped in a blanket taking in all the heat from the heater in the living room, your famous spegetti dinners while memere made her famous cole slaw we'd all have candle lit dinners our whole Whitten family at times at Memeres, and you Uncle Don always brought so much enjoyment to the family. You never letting anyone double dip into the pickle jar(germs). :)Your forever famous made up nick names like Crisky, You taught me to play the guitar and piano. "Let it be" The Beatles and "wild Thing"

Its hard, just know that you were a good person Uncle Don I'm grateful for the very much missed hug and the chance to see you one last time and say I Love you.

I love you, always have and Always will, You'll never be forgotten and will live in my heart forever.

Don was an affable good friend to me since I met him years ago. A very good sense of humor and a real help when it came to household issues. We should all get along with our ex's like Don with Becky. Gone way too soon!!

I just want to say what a great uncle you were. Whenever I came to visit, you always were there and always had a way of making me smile. You were the uncle that always wanted to have fun and always liked seeing people having fun. I will miss that most of all. You definetly were taken from us way to soon and I understand that we don't have all the answers. I just hope and pray that for those of us left here that we someday will understand. God be with you Uncle Don...Love Tim
