Gerald Nichols Obituary

BINGHAM -- Gerald E. "Gerry" Nichols, 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep Easter Sunday morning, April 8, 2007, at home with his son Stephen.

He was born March 27, 1923, in Starks, one of four children of Hildreth and Gladys (Sawyer) Nichols. Gerry was educated in Starks schools. On Dec. 5, 1942, he was united in marriage to Leona Beane.

Gerry worked many occupations. He ran the overhead crane during the construction of the Indian Pond Dam, worked at Quimby Veneer Mill for many years, he cut wood with Garby Garland and their horse "Dynamite," was a member of Carpenters and Millwrights Union Local No. 320 and Local No. 1996; he had worked construction on the Anheiser Bush Brewery in Merrimack, N.H., at Maine Yankee in Wiscasset and the Scott Paper Pulp Mill No. 1 and No. 2 paper machines in Skowhegan. In 1995 he started a saw sharpening business and had sharpened 16 to 17 thousand circular saws and nearly seven thousand hand saws. Gerry loved carpentry work; he had built 19 sets of kitchen cabinets, also gun cases, bureaus, entertainment centers, desks, end tables, coffee tables, and hutches, and he had also built and remodeled houses.

Gerry enjoyed hunting, fishing and picking berries. Our father was an extremely busy man after retiring, doing what he loved and enjoyed most.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Leona (Beane) Nichols; a son, Timothy; his parents, Hildreth and Gladys; and a brother, Ellsworth (Bunny).

He is survived by his sons, Gerald Lee and friend Carol, Stephen, and Frankie and his wife Sheila; his daughter, Flossie and friend Larry, all living close to their father in Bingham; his grandchildren, Heather and husband Kurt, Kariann, Shay and husband Ken, Charity, Ida and their mother Eva, Erica and friend Scott, Eurica and husband Troy, Reggie and wife Cathy, Stephanie and husband Derrick, Eli and friend Kristen, Margo and friend Kevin, Zachary and wife Courtney, Terry and wife Jamie, Philip and fiancŽe Ashley and Alicia; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Freda and husband Sheldon; a brother, Philip and wife Joan; a special nephew, Stub Atwood; many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all.

At Gerry's request there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will held at the Robinson Memorial Cemetery in Moscow at a date and time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to The American Cancer Society, Northern New England Regional Office, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham ME, 04086-1240. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 18 River St., Bingham.

To my "Stevie" and everyone in Gerry's family.
Steve, thank you for the care of your Dad:I believe that care resulted in Gerry being able to stay at home for the time he had left and be with his beloved family at the time of his passing. I shall never forget the wonderful times spent around the kitchen table reminising about the Bingham that used to be. Gerry could tell you who married who and all of their their relatives
He was loved by all of the community and he will be missed so terribly. He was a beloved family man, talented carpenter--there no task that he couldn't do.

I was very sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. Remembering the many good times we all had growing up in the neighborhood, it just doesn't seem as if enough time has passed for our parents to leave us. Our thoughts and prayers are for you all in this trying time. Hayden & Norma Spalding

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain.
I am in the morning hush.
I am in the graceful rush
of beautiful birds in circling flight.
I am in the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom.
I am in the quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing.
I am in each lovely thing.
Many loving memories.

I am so sorry to hear of Gerry's passing away - he was such a wonderful friend & neighbor to our family over the years!
He always had a friendly word for all of us out there in his workshop-garage whenever we passed by...
Back a few years ago, when he still could,I remember that he'd pick the berries and Mama would make a pie for him & Stevie. he sure enjoyed that.
Back when he & Leona used to live in the house across the street, there used to be some pretty wild times, what with all us kids traipsing in & out of the house!!
So many fond memories!!!
Well, now he's with Leona and all the other "Angels" who have passed on before him; may he rest in peace.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers in this most difficult of times.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

So sorry to hear of your loss. He was such a kind man and loved to tease. He reminded me of my Dad so much. Most anyone who knew him referred to him fondly as "PAPA". Find peace in knowing he is in a better place now. Hats off to you "Stevie" for all the loving care you gave him.
Love Gretchen & Randy
