TURNER -- Dr. John H. Gould, of Turner, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, Auburn.

Dr. Gould was born in Portland on Sept. 10, 1934, the first child of Eleanor (Webster) Gould and Richard Gould. He grew up in both Cape Elizabeth and Winchester, Mass., and graduated from Winchester High School. He was a graduate of Haverford College in Pennsylvania, Cornell University Medical School in New York and received his Master of Public Health degree from University of California School of Public Health, Berkeley, Calif. As a pediatrician he served in the Army hospital in Frankfurt, Germany and afterward worked in the San Francisco and then Boston areas. After further education, adult and child psychiatry training at Harvard University Cambridge Hospital program, he worked as a child psychiatrist at New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham, Mass., Northern Essex Mental Health Center in Haverhill, Mass., and in private practice in Georgetown, Mass.

In 1984, Dr. Gould and his family moved to Turner, and in the course of his many years in professional practice, he worked at St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, Tri County Mental Health Center, Jackson Brook Institute in Portland, Sweetser Children's Services in Saco, Kennebec Behavioral Health in Augusta and Winthrop, and private practice in Auburn. Dr. Gould has had a distinguished career and has always been regarded as a wonderful doctor and person, generous, caring and compassionate with a sense of humor and an ability to relate to children and adults of all ages and backgrounds.

In the past 18 years, he has shown great courage in dealing with serious health issues and has always been thankful for the support and love from his wife and children. Dr. Gould is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Susan (Skillman) Gould; their son, Benjamin Gould, of Brookline, Mass., and Turner; and Dr. Gould's children from his first marriage, Alison Gould, of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Kenneth Gould, of Pawtucket, R.I. Dr. Gould is also survived by his siblings and their families: Stephen Gould, of Chelsea, Vt., Sally Wilson, of Medfield, Mass., and Susan Hoffman, of Natick, Mass.; and by his sister-In-law, Pamela Bolint, of Damariscotta, and her children.

The family expresses much gratitude to the many supportive friends and colleagues, Dr. Michael Rifkin the caring staff of Hospice House, and the nursing staff of Central Maine Medical Center's Physical Rehabilitation Unit where Dr. Gould was a patient for two months.

Dr. Gould requested that there not be a funeral for him; however, the family plans on a gathering to honor his memory at 2 p.m. Nov. 2, 2013, at Fore Seasons Restaurant, Turner Highlands Golf Course, North Parish Road, Turner.

I was so very sad to see that my dear friend, John Gould, had passed on. He was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital with me for many years and was such a delight to be with. Those sparkly, fun filled eyes of his, ever ready for a light moments were special. There were many Christmas Eves that Ruth Riddick, John and I spent trying to bring a "light" moment for the patients who were stuck in the hospital setting at Christmas. John always came in with the silliest of hats and made patients and staff alike chuckle. Some how he pulled it off with a straight face. He could look so dignified and wear those silly hats. He had quite a selection, as I recall.

Also, John recommended I contact Dr. Shotz who has been such an asset on my health journey. My last memory was taking a class about King Arthur and his court at Senior College in Portland which John enjoyed a great deal!

I have many fond memories of John and am so glad he was a part of my life for a number of years.

I send along prayers to all of John's family as you deal with the loss of this very special man.

John Gould was my friend. Among other adventures, we shared a birthday month and celebrated together the last time we had a "zero" in the number; an unforgettable night. My heart is with Sue. Her lovely husband is a loss to us all.

My son and I had the privilege of meeting with Dr. Gould many times. He was the only doctor my son felt a rapport with - so much so that when my son wanted counseling at age 23 (10 years later) he asked if I thought he could get back in with him. He was Dr. Awesome Socks.

My thoughts and prayers are with Dr Gould's family. I worked with Dr Gould at KBH and he was the best person ever. The kids loved him and so did his co-workers. He was one of a kind and very special. I will always remember him.

I had the priviledge of working with John at the former JBI. He was a wonderful man and an excellent doctor. The staff respected and admired him, and the children loved him. My condolences to his family.
