Michael Gurney Obituary

Michael Omer Gurney
1921 - 2016
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Michael Omer Gurney, born Omer Otis Gurney, 94, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, shortly after completing his daily morning walk. He was born in Shawmut, Maine on Nov. 27, 1921, to Otis and Gelie (Peavey) Gurney. He attended Fairfield schools, graduating from Lawrence High School in 1939. Soon after graduation, Omer joined and served in the U.S. Navy.
He married Connie Vance, of Caribou, and together they ran a small farm in Northern Maine briefly until moving to Portsmouth, N.H. Omer was a mechanic for many years, and then cleaned offices right up until he was in his late 80's.
Omer was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witness in August of 1950 and practiced faithfully until his death. He loved giving of his time and energy in the public ministry work. He served in many capacities over the years in The Portsmouth Congregation of Jehovah's Witness.
Omer is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Connie, and his sister, Ruby Harding. He is survived by his sisters Emerline Bartley of Shawmut, Earline McGoff and husband, Stanley of Shawmut, and Christine Beaulieu of Fairfield; and many nieces and nephews.
Uncle Omer, to his nieces and nephews, will be remembered as a caring, fun-loving uncle who always had a kind, encouraging word, an amazing smile, and a laugh that would light up the room. There are many nurses who will attest to the fact that he was a bit of a flirt, also.
Omer's family in Maine would like to thank The Portsmouth Congregation of Jehovah's Witness who loved him as their own and took such amazing care of him. You were all such an important part of his life, and he talked of you all fondly and often. Our brother and uncle loved you deeply. And our many thanks also to the loving staff at The Inn at Edgewood in Portsmouth who brought such joy to him in the final months of his amazing life.
No services are planned at this time.

Michael became my surrogate grandfather and he always enjoyed calling himself my "granddad". As a home care nurse, I took care of him while he still lived at home. He would often come to see me on his daily walks while I was working at The Edgewood Centre. He always made my day with his bright smile, warm hugs and encouraging words to continue my nursing education to become a nurse practitioner. I will forever miss him and our long talks or just sitting silently in the sun holding hands. Rest in peace, grandpa. I love you.

He was an incredibly positive person. He never said to us a bad thing about anyone. I wish we knew him longer. We look forward to seeing him again!

Mike and Connie were both very dear to me. Growing up in their congregation, they both were very supportive of me. I shall miss him!!
