Born in New England and raised during the Depression, Mr. Tilton was a quintessential Yankee. He graduated from Weston High School in Massachusetts, where he met his future wife, Carolyn Adele Robinson. He joined the Navy as soon as he turned 18, and served two years aboard the USS Missouri, visiting foreign ports in South and Central America. He attended Babson and Nichols colleges, married his high school sweetheart, and settled down working as a machinist for R. S. Wilder, in Waltham, Mass., and bought a home in Natick, Mass., where he and Carol raised five sons. He later moved to Alna, working as a carpenter and town selectman. He briefly lived in East Falmouth, Mass., before retiring to a log cabin in Durham.
He is survived by his sons, Thomas A. Tilton III of Waterville, Mark Tilton of Boston and Scott Tilton of Rockland, Christopher Tilton of Durham, and Wayne Tilton, currently working for the Peace Corps in Africa; as well as 11 grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. May 22 at North Pownal United Methodist Church. The church is located at 851 Lawrence Road in Pownal. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org). For more information about the service, call 688-4938.
We would like to express our great appreciation to the staff at Lakewood Continuing Care Center, who provided care and services for Mr. Tilton toward the end of his life, and treated him with compassion and respect, and made him a part of their family. Also, gratitude is due to Dr. Knausenberger, Mr. Tilton's primary doctor, who treated both Mr. Tilton's ailments, and his family's concerns, with courtesy and understanding.
Arrangements are under the care of Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

ear with Eleanor's sister and her Husband. It always like it was only yesterday we saw them as we pickedup where we left. Carol died a year before Eleanor but a year after I brought my special uo to meet Tom and they clicked together right away and this custom coniued until 2009 when Doris died. From then on it wasfrequent phone calls until recenltly. All this shows what wonerful people they were. Iwill always miss them until I die.

Tommy, Mark, Scott, Chris and Wayne,
I was so sorry to hear from my dad that your father had passed on. He really was a wonderful man, and I know how much you will miss him. He was the "salt of the earth" in the very best sense of that phrase. You may know that he visited us in Boothbay Harbor several times, and a couple summers back we had a really nice reunion there. Even my sister was there, visiting from her home in California.
My brother and I have lots of great memories of when we all lived across the street from each other in Natick on Ranger Road-over 50 years ago-and reminisce about them often-the Green Woods, your dad floating in the street in an inner tube when we had that hurricane, when he broke some neighborhood kid's BB gun over his knee after the kid had shot my brother with it (Jimmy Sharkey, maybe?), picnics together, taking your mom and dad out for boat rides when they visited my parents in Greenwich, and so many other really great visits and memories. I will never forget your mom or dad or any of you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
