Charles Ramsdell Obituary
CAPE ELIZABETH - Charles F. Ramsdell passed away at Gosnell House June 25, 2008.
Son of Fred and Louise (Lemelin), he was born in Bangor, on March 13, 1926. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1944. Immediately following high school he enlisted to serve in World War II. He went overseas after graduation with Mark Clark's 6th Army. He became a telegraph operator for the OSS in Europe and was assigned occupation duty in Austria.
His lifetime of work in the printing industry started at Furbish Roberts Printing Co. in Bangor where he became a linotype operator. He worked as an operator for several companies and newspapers. Tower Publishing was one of the principal publishers for whom he worked. In 1967 he bought Forest City Printing Co. which he operated until retirement in 1987.
Charles became a Master Mason in 1950, a Royal Arch Mason in 1958, a Knight Templar in 1959 and a Shriner in 1976. He loved golf and had been a member at Purpoodock, Wilson Lakes and Willowdale golf courses. Another of his passions and special talents was fine woodworking: many of the homes in the Cape and throughout Greater Portland are furnished with pieces he has made or repaired.
Charles leaves his wife Anne Flint Tibbetts Ramsdell; his three children, Stephanie Tibbetts Colpitts (husband Richard) of Arundel, Valory Ramsdell Omasta (husband Mark) of Danbury, Conn., and Bradford Tibbetts (wife Naoko) of Hawaii. He has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He leaves two sisters and their husbands: Patricia and Clifford West and Anita and Robert Thayer both of Winthrop. He is predeceased by a brother Frank and sister Eleanor.
Charles and Anne have enjoyed spending winters in Dade City Fla., for over 20 years. At Blue Jay Mobile Home Park, Charles has been very active with leadership of the association and organization of a variety of many recreation activities. He also enjoyed his volunteer work at the Day Star Hope Center.
The entire Ramsdell family would especially like to thank grandchildren Kristi and Jeff for all their attentive help over the last two months. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the 5th floor staff at Mercy Hospital and all the staff at Gosnell House for their compassionate care during Charles' illness.
