Eleanor Thayer Obituary

Eleanor Agnes
Stacki Thayer
SOUTH PORTLAND -- Eleanor passed away peacefully after a brief illness at Sedgewood Commons surrounded by her loving big family.
She was born in Portland on May 16, 1925, the daughter of Kazimiera and Ignatius Stacki of Poland. She grew up on the West End of Danforth Street in Portland where she enjoyed her Polish community, big family and being a governess for Senator Hale. She graduated from Portland High School where she was a majorette.
Married Feb. 6, 1945, to Robert E. Thayer, they started their family and resided at 96 Clifford St. in South Portland. She loved summers at Highland Lake at Camp Big Enough. She loved her neighbors and her home.
Eleanor was a unique and classy lady! She loved to be surrounded by people and thoroughly enjoyed social events. Every social event was an open opportunity to perform. With her hat dipped low, her tap shoes on, and a song playing (often times only in her heart) a dance was never far behind. Eleanor's true love was that of dance whenever, wherever and for whomever. She could often be found at the Lyric Theater and Community Center. Even at the age of 83 she wowed the onlookers with a dance to 'New York New York' at her granddaughters wedding. Each dance recital of her many granddaughters was a proud moment for her as she knew she passed along this love of dance.
Eleanor, who was a loving mother and grandmother, passed along a love of baking pie crusts, secret biscuits and her guwumpkies recipe which will always remain in the family.
She loved every minute of taking care of Ricky and going to their favorite places including the Lobster Shack and Higgins Beach. A unique, eccentric and spunky lady, in purple who left her mark wherever she went. She will be missed but on a stage somewhere, a performance lives on.
Surviving are her family Bobby and Judy Thayer, Jim and Nancy Thayer, Debbie and Gary Brookings, Joey Thayer, Pattie and Norman Locke, Ricky Thayer and Tommy Thayer; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren, all of South Portland.
Visiting hours will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring. Arrangements made by the Hobbs Funeral Home.

Our condolences to Pattie, Norman, Taylor, Olivia and Natasha Locke, and the entire Thayer family for the loss of their mother, mother in law and grandmother, Eleanor. Eleanor was a dear friend and her greatest joy was when she was with her family. Later she would tell about the event and describe in detail all that happened. She had enormous pride in the accomplishment of all of her children and grandchildren. We are grateful for all the times that we got to spend with Eleanor at family events. Sincerely, Betty and Gordon Perry

Debbie,
I have so many funny, loving memories of your Mom. I loved coming to your house and she would be singing, dressed in her white boots in a world her own. I tell my son all the fun things we did together growing up and I always include stories of your Mom and her infectious laugh!! Bless you guys. Thinking of all of you, Jody

Dear Bobby, Jim, Debbie, Joey, Pattie, Ricky, and Tommy,
I'm sorry for your loss. I do have very fond memories of your mom dancing for Debbie and me. She would push chairs back in the living room and show us a step or two. She was very full of life. I'm sure heaven has been spiced up considerably by her presence!
