Frederick "Fred" Darling, 70
BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - Frederick "Fred" Darling passed away on March 8, 2016, at Sturgill Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, Fla., after a brief illness.
Fred, the eighth of twelve children, was born on April 25, 1945, to Elgee G. Brice and Elmer E. Darling.
He attended South Portland schools and served in the U.S. Army for 2 years in Germany.
Fred worked for many years as a roofing foreman for James A. McBrady, Inc. before becoming an owner of Maine Roofing, Inc. with his brothers Bill, Jack and David in July 1981.
In 2003, Fred and Irene moved to Florida where he was employed by Springer-Peterson Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. as a project manager.
Fred loved life, his large family and his friends. A former member of the Portland Elks and a trustee at the Portland Eagles, Fred was an avid golfer and a member of the Brookridge Country Club Golf Association, Brooksville, Fla.
Fred is survived by his wife Irene, his daughter Chrystal, and his stepson Robin Roberts. He is also survived by his sisters Carolyn B. "Callie" Carson of Portland, Arlene Casey of Alfred, and Alice Lailer of Clifton, N.Y; his brothers John G. Darling of Dunnellon, Fla., James E. Darling Sr. of Steep Falls, and David M. Darling of Scarborough; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Eleanor E. Voisine, and his brothers William M. Darling Sr., George R. Darling, Steven A. Darling, and Peter A. Darling.
A private celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.

I remember Freddie, Callie and Billy from years past. I've often thought of him and the many laughs we had. So many stories I could tell, It's so sad to hear of his passing but his memories will live on forever with his family and friends. He will be missed.

To Dave and all the Darling Family,
I worked with Fred at McBradys while going through college. He was a great guy to work for and was always optimistic and full of life. I'm sure he will be missed by many. I will pray for his soul. God bless you all, and Fred too.
