Garth L. (Gus)
    Carmichael, 73
     CUMBERLAND -- Garth L. (Gus) Carmichael, 73, of Cumberland Foreside died Aug. 8, 2006, after a brief illness.
     He was born in Monticello, a son of Walter and Ada Lenitime Carmichael. He grew up in South Portland. He was a star pitcher for South Portland High School, and was inducted into the All Telegram League with an 8-2 record.
     After graduating, he signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies and later signed with the Washington Senators and the Cleveland Indians. In 2003, he was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.
     He served in the U.S. Army and was later employed by the U.S. Postal Service.
     He is survived by his wife Geraldine Carmichael; a step-son, John Piszczak of Turlock, Calif.; a step-daughter, Janice Fawcett of Keller Texas; a brother, Clair Carmichael of South Portland; and two step-grandchildren.
     A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday Aug. 14, 2006, at the Chase Funeral Home, 350 Main St., Westbrook.
