George Lekousi, 91
SCARBOROUGH -- George E. Lekousi, 91, died Thursday at his home amid friends and family.
He was born in Portland on Aug. 18, 1918, to Eustace and Helen Lekousi. George grew up in the West End near Union Station, one of six children. He attended Portland High School and later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Later he worked at the family bakery for many years. A baker and salesperson, George helped build up the business through direct sales to restaurants and the food-industry in Southern Maine and central coastal areas of the state. Lekousi's Bakery was one of the state's leading bakeries. In the 1970s, George and his brother, Andrew, opened the Westfield Inn which George managed for nearly 20 years with the adjoining Quick Lunch Cafe.
Mr. Lekousi was a life member of the VFW and the Masons. He was also a long-time member of the Order of AHEPA, a Greek- American fraternal organization, and the Kora Shriners.
George had a life-long interest in art and music, at one time studying violin under the tutelage of a noted Portland violinist. An avid sports fan, too, George enjoyed watching local sporting events, particularly football games of his grandson, Philip Lekousi, and events involving his brother, one of Maine's sports legends, Arthur 'Art' Lekousi, of Westbrook.
Very gregarious, George had many friends. He enjoyed golf and played often with friends at area courses. Card games, cribbage, and daily crossword puzzles were other interests. Above all, however, he enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren and supporting their activities.
George is survived by his wife, Helen Ladakakos Lekousi of Scarborough; a brother and sister- in-law, Arthur and Freda Lekousi of Westbrook; his son-in-law and daughter, Christos and Mary Papoutsy of New Hampshire, a son, Louis Lekousi; two grandchildren, Philip and Adara Lekousi of Scarborough; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Lekousi; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial visitation will be on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Hobbs Funeral Home. Interment will follow with prayers and military service at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland.
