Janet Shaw Obituary

Janet Miller Shaw, 76
CUMBERLAND - Janet Miller Shaw, 76, died Jan. 12, 2015 at her home in Cumberland Foreside from heart failure. Janet was born May 29, 1938 in Easton, Maine to Henry and Mae Miller, the youngest of three girls. She graduated from Easton High School and then went on to graduate from Hartford Airline School.
After graduation from Hartford Airline School, Janet returned home to Easton to marry her high school sweetheart, Bruce Shaw, where they raised their two children on the family potato farm. While her children were young, Janet worked with her dad on the family farm. In the early seventies, and with her friend Lois Dodge, Janet started an income tax and accounting business in Presque Isle and Fort Fairfield. In 1976, Janet and Bruce relocated to Henderson, Nevada where Janet started her successful career in real estate. For twenty three years, Janet excelled as a realtor in Las Vegas. In addition to her business success, she was well respected by her colleagues and clients and developed deep and long-lasting friendships with both.
In 1998, Janet and Bruce retired and came home to Maine. Despite her illness, she was remarkably active and busy. Whether it was cheering her grandchildren from the sidelines, her daily four mile power walks, afternoons in the kitchen baking or her days volunteering at Maine Medical Center, she was always on the go. Her happiest days were the times she spent with her family and friends.
Janet will be especially remembered for her strength of character, honesty, tenacity, drive, devotion to her family and her baking skills.
Janet is survived by Bruce, her husband of 58 years; her daughter Heidi and her husband, Warren Alpern of North Yarmouth, son Jeff and partner Tina. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jen, Jon and his wife Mollie, Kelsey, Hunter and Abbie; her sister, Chrystal Bishop of Brunswick, sister Donna Ewing and her husband, Charles of Arlington, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to Drs. Maloney, Love and Hemphill. Also to the nurses at VNA, Turning Point, CICU, R7 and R9 at Maine Medical Center.
There will be a memorial service in Janet's home town of Easton, Maine in the spring.

Donations can be made in Janet's memory to Turning Point Program, Maine Medical Center Development Program, 22 Bramhall, Portland, Maine 04102 or online at www.fundraising.mmc.org/Donate_Now.

Where does the time. go?!! There isn't enough paper to hold all the memories that Ronald and I have with Bruce and Janet. Between high school days in common, Ron and Bruce working at Loring, Janet and I sharing time with the children we have in common, so much to talk about. We laughed hard, played cards hard, and usually Janet and I won because we cheated so bad. Life in general was wonderful oh so many years ago and until Janet left us. Always spent New Years Eve together regardless of the weather!!!! We felt bad when Janet and Bruce moved out of the county. Bruce and the kids must have many down days with
wife and Mother gone. We speak of them often and the Shaw family will always be a large part of our memories. Regards to you from Ronald and Carolee and family.

Bruce, my connection to Janet goes back to the Chute with my grandfather George Dane (Dean) who was a brother to Anne Dean Wolverton. Anne's daughter was Hattie Miller, Janet's grandmother. My grandfather was 25 years older than my grandmother and so when we visited Hattie in the Chute, I always found it difficult to understand why my mother Helen Dane Todd was Hattie's first cousin when Janet's father and my mother were in the same age bracket. But my grandfather was 65 when my mother was born, and thus a whole generation was skipped. My mother and Janet's mother were lifetime friends. And after they were both widowed, they enjoyed traveling together, volunteering at the P. I hospital, and doing church events. Janet and I were one year apart in school, and she didn't go to my school until 1949 when she was in the 6th grade and I was in the 7th. But we had known each other because of the family connection. When I think of Janet, I see all those strong and vivacious women who proceeded her: mother Mae, grandmother Hattie, and great grandmother Anne.
In sympathy, Elizabeth Todd Shaw

With great sadness, we learned of the death of a special woman. One who loved her family dearly. We knew her through her activities with our mutual granddaughter, Abigail, and knew how much she loved and cared for Miss Abigail. Our hearts are heavy. She left a legacy of fond memories to help us through the grief. With love, Marilyn and Alan McIvor

I am so sad to hearing of Janet's passing. I so enjoyed working with her on Wednesdays in the Volunteer Office at Maine Medical Center and when she went out with a bunch of gals for suppers (girls night out). I have thought of Janet often since she resigned as a volunteer. She was a lovely lady who spoke of her family alot and how blessed she was. I remember how excited she was when she got an ipad. She said doing the work in our office gave her confidence to use it. With sympathy to Bruce and her family.
