Virginia Cary Marshall Sommer

1916 - 2014

Virginia Cary Marshall Sommer, 1916-2014; Virginia Cary Marshall Sommer was born in Atlanta, Georgia eventually moving to Memphis, Tennessee. Throughout her life she demonstrated a deep love of the south and its culture. She then went on to pursue a lifelong art career, receiving art training from The Memphis Art Academy, The Corcoran Art School in Washington, D.C. and The West Hartford Art League. Mrs. Sommer's accomplishments in the art field were substantial. They included extensive portrait painting experience; commercial advertising illustration; and teaching for many years as an instructor at The Wayne Art Center. She exhibited in both the Delaware Valley area and nationally. Spending numerous summers in Bermuda observing sea rocks, tidal pools, trees and flowers she felt a profound love of nature, its energies and mysteries. Compelled by the growth, spirit and essence of the environment she was inspired to reveal those mysteries in her works. She believed that painting and music were closely intertwined giving expression to the artist's lifetime love of the emotional, intellectual, spiritual and visual. She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edward Charles Sommer, survived by a daughter Virginia Sommer Schaefer of Berwyn, PA; a grandson William Edward Schaefer and his wife Brienne Wagner Schaefer, Two granddaughters, Noelle and Willa, all of Woodbridge, VA. A service will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 11:00 AM in the Chapel of St. Davids Episcopal Church, 763 S. Valley Forge Rd., Wayne, PA 19087. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Davids Church. Stuard FH- Ardmore
