Michael Tyree Obituary

Michael James Tyree
Manistee, Michigan
04/28/1960 - 05/22/2025
Michael James Tyree, age 65 of Manistee died on May 22, 2025 at his home.
He was born on April 28, 1960 in Ionia, MI the son of Max & Pauline (Keatts) Tyree. He was a graduate of White Pigeon High School and Western Michigan University.
Michael was an accomplished journalist and retired in 2015. "It is hard to sum up one's life in a brief message, but I can say one thing is for sure, he valued his friends and family more than anything. He especially enjoyed the times on his boat with friends and his dad. He was a voracious reader of classic literature and history.
Mike enjoyed music, attending countless concerts with his friends around the country. Mike was a huge fan of the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and the Michigan Wolverines. He was a competitive participant of golf, football and pick-up basketball games. Gathering with friends and playing poker and engaging in conversation was an important part of his life and he will be missed by those he engaged and considered him their friend. "
He is survived by his mother, Pauline Tyree and brother, Doug Tyree. His father, Max and brother, Edward preceded him in death.
A Celebration Of Life will be held Friday, June 13, 2025 at 2 p.m. at the Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Manistee. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Mike was my best friend. He gave so much more to everyone he cared about. Words of wisdom no matter what the situation. His written words were beautiful; he could paint a picture with words that would make it come alive.
He would come to dinner at my house; we both loved seafood and fine wines. One evening there was a huge thunderstorm and we sat on the patio and watched the light show. We didn´t have to talk, the space was filled with natural beauty and our friendship.
Mike, I think of you everyday and you will always be in my heart. Until we meet again....I so look forward to that next thunderstorm we see again.

Mike was a reassuring voice on the phone when I was working on a particularly difficult series of stories at the Kalamazoo Gazette. He was in Traverse City at the time but he was someone who knew what I was experiencing. I will always value his advice and friendship.

He was a great reporter, one of the finest to ever work at the Kalamazoo Gazette. I am sorry to hear of his passing. I wish I could still be reading his work. It was superb, honest, straight forward and true. Unfortunately we lost touch when he ventured north. Rest in peace my friend.

Mike made every story he touched during his time at the Kalamazoo Gazette better. He also brought out the best in every reporter he worked with. His search for the real story and the truth wasn't always appreciated, but it always mattered. RIP Mike.

Mike was my friend for 50 years. A great friend an incredible human being. He cared about the working man and we spent many hours together engaging in thoughtful and meaningful conversations. His competitive nature was evident in the many basketball, golf and football games played over the years. We shared the joy of music travelling the backroads of Michigan and attending several concerts together and with friends. I was proud to call him my friend and I shall miss him.
