Margaret Tarrant Obituary

Margaret Mary (Peggy) Tarrant, formerly Mannion Died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family and friends, in the loving bosom of the Sisters of Nazareth, at San Rafael California on December 12, 2012. Mother to Joseph, Richard, Noreen, William and Edward; grandmother to Genevieve, Julianna, Patty, Dave, Sean, Michael, Steve, Danny, Heather, Katie, Peter, Kenny, Tom, Julie, Linda, Patrick, Brian, Karen, Sheri and Nancy, together with their spouses; great-grandmother to forty-five and great-great-grandmother to four, by all of whom she will be remembered with great and last affection. Peggy Tarrant, who they say, "Never forgot a name or a birthday", touched the lives of countless friends with her warmth, humor, and compassion, and especially for her gift of making each one of us feel very, very special. A "great friend" to one, a "great lady" to another, and "graceful and good to all", is the way she will linger in our thoughts for a long, long time. Born February 15, 1918 in Oakland California to Thomas Clifford, (originally form County Kerry Ireland), and his wife Johanna, Peggy was a niece to Michael and James Coakley, a sister to Ellen Ayers, and a fond relative of all the proud members of the Clifford, Cox and Coakley clans. She attended Saint Francis DeSales grammar school and graduated from Holy Names High School class of 1936. A proud employee of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company (140 New Montgomery) for 37 years, Peggy enjoyed to the fullest everything that downtown San Francisco in the 1950's had to offer. From her pill-box hats, to white gloves, to patent leather pumps, she single-handedly boosted the bottom line of Macy's and the City of Paris for several years in a row. Lunch in the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus was a special treat until just a few short weeks ago. Following the death of her first husband, Joseph Mannion, she found true happiness in the arms of her second, the late Patrick J. Tarrant. She has resided the past few years and up until her death at Nazareth House in San Rafael. A Rosary Vigil will be held in Margaret Mary's memory in the chapel at Nazareth House, 245 Nova Albion Way, San Rafael CA, at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, December 16, 2012. A Funeral Mass in honor of Margaret Mary will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 17, 2012 in the Chapel at Nazareth House. A reception will follow in the Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, Peggy asked that, if you wish, donations be made to the Sisters of Nazareth. Services Entrusted to: Monte's Chapel of the Hills San Anselmo, Ca (415) 453-8440

Peggy was such a wonderful lady, and she had a social life I envied. Always warm and loving with a kind word and smile. I am so glad I met her and will always cherish the memories of her lovely presence.

Joe, It is with a sense of both loneliness and warmth that I heard of Peggy's advancement to her eternal reward. I was lucky enough have known both of my grandmothers and for me, Peggy stands proudly alongside them! Peggy's first husband, Joseph, was brother to my grandmother, Molly (Mary Ellen) Somers, nee Mannion. Though I never had the honour of meeting Joe (senior) I have a clear image of him proudly holding up a jar of 'Mary Ellen' jam, a photo posted with pride to his beloved sister in Ireland. My grandmother so was proud of her two brothers who travelled to the USA to make a living. Both carved out very successful careers in California, but her pride lay in the beautiful wives and families they had there. Larry and Helen in Santa Rosa and Joe and Peggy in San Francisco. Peggy visited us here in Ireland and it was always a pleasure to be in her company. She held the Emerald Isle dear to her heart. I got to know Peggy properly on my first trip to California in 1990. On that occasion she and Patrick hosted the most wonderful welcoming party in my honour at their home. Since then I grew closer and closer to the most refined, warm, and clever woman imaginable. Her knowledge was as wide as it was deep, and her warmth and empathy even deeper. She could talk about politics and economics with the same ease as recipes and children! A glance around her beautiful home on Clyde Ave left us in doubt as to her appreciation of style, art, food and music. Indeed one look at Peggy and you saw style and finesse. I was with her during her move to Nazareth, and cherish the little items she insisted that I take back to Ireland with me. I will never, ever forget Peggy. It has been an honour to know here, and I just hope that her charm and wit have brushed onto my shoulder just a little! It is reassuring to know that both Californian Mannion families are holding that strong bond of friendship with us here in Ireland - long may it last. As she heads to meet her family members gone before her (via Ireland, of course!), we are assured that her strong, unfaltering Christian faith - that same faith that took her this far - will guide her safely home. "Í leaba í measc na n-aingeal agus na naomh go raibh do anam uasal". (May you have rest among the angels and saints) . Le grá, Art

Aunt Peggy, you are a lovely woman! Thank you for your dedication to family and loving life. You are a wonderful person, a lovely wife, and a grandmother of great Proportions who never forgot the names each of the children. Especially, I thank you for the times that Uncle Pat, you and I have to spent together. And the many times we have spent together since. I loved holding your hands in the most recent days and so grateful I could be with you once more...You are and will remain a wonderful role model for women everywhere.

Peggy Tarrant was a wonderful person, with great verve, always friendly, open and non judgemental.
She was as smart as anyone could possibly be. A role model for all. The best possible Grandmother ever created.
