Charlotte Mann Obituary

Charlotte Adele Hernandez Mann known as "The Fern Lady" died peacefully in her home in Allentown after a four-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. Despite her physical challenge, she was a fearless trooper, a unique woman, a loving wife, a fabulous mother, and a dear friend. Cheerfully called "The Energizer Bunny", because she was an amazingly energetic, enthusiastic, supportive and loving, friendly force of nature. She was a joy to be around and made friends wherever she went, even in the aisles of the grocery store. To know Charlotte was to love her and she left this life at the age of 98 with countless friends whom she met through work at Mack Trucks, volunteer work at the Salvation Army, May Fest, Lehigh Valley Hospital, Head Start, the Burn Foundation, JFK after school program, Day Break. She received the Community Spirit Award in 1999, the Community Partnership Award in 2001, and the Center for Healthy Aging Community Service Award in 2003.

She was born in Allentown in 1921, the daughter of Bessie Marguerite Warner Hernandez and Roger Bennett Hernandez, she had a sister Rita Wilker and brother, Rodger Hernandez both gone before her. She had the adventure of her young life when she flew to Colorado Springs in 1945 to marry, the love of her life, Robert Samuel Mann, Bob, our dad, at Fort Carson at the end of WWII.

Charlotte worked as an executive secretary for Mack Trucks before the war and until her three kids, Tom, Todd, and Nancy were born and she became the "stay at home mom extraordinaire". She returned to Mack Trucks in 1963 to afford our college educations; as we were the first in our family's history to attend college. We never had to take care of her because she always took care of us.

Charlotte loved her family including her children, Thomas Mann of New Orleans, LA; Todd Mann of Medway, MA; Nancy Mann of Meridian, ID; her grandsons Nate Slonaker of Seattle, WA; Zachary Mann and, daughter-in-law, Cathy Mann of Medway, MA; and nieces and nephews, Sandy Sahler (Lancaster, PA); Jeff Wilker (Basking Ridge, NJ); Sandra Wagaman (Allentown); Brenda Traub (NJ); Carol Leh ( Allentown).

As we close this chapter we will remember that Charlotte renewed her driver's license at the age of 98, rode on the Zamboni machine at the PPL Center at 95, drove her elderly friends around town, sent out her Christmas poems, by snail mail, to more than 100 people every holiday season, flew in a helicopter with 2 priests in Hawaii during a storm, skinny-dipped in the quarry on Vinalhaven island, in Maine, organized her neighborhood garage sale for 30 years and loved all of you who had the pleasure to know her. Robert and Charlotte were founding members of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church where Charlotte, at the time of her death, was the oldest member of the congregation. She loved her church family.

We would also like to thank Charlotte's cancer doctor, Muhammad Rizvi MD, the lovely and caring staff at Country Meadows, Allentown for the compassionate care provided to Charlotte for the past two months, the Lehigh Valley Health Network Hospice team and her friends and neighbors Sue Drunkenmiller and Rick Lewis who looked after her every day for 17 years.

Rest in Peace Sweet Charlotte!

OMG! I am so sad. I didn’t know she passed. I had the extreme pleasure of being her hairstylist for about 30 years. The last I saw her she stopped in the salon to say hello while she was in Coplay going by the home she lived in many years ago. I remember being so happy to see her since I hadn’t in a little while. I always looked forward to her Christmas letter she would send every year and marveled at how she always made it rhyme. She lit up the whole salon when she came in. I’m sure she is lighting up the heavens with her smile, laugh, and stories. This world for sure is a lot less bright with out her in it. RIP sweet Charlotte you will be missed!

Charlotte was curious to learn more about our community here at Legend and took a tour. I immediately knew she was amazing! Although she never moved here, I know the residents would have loved meeting her and as she clearly enriched the lives of those around her.

Charlotte was such an amazing and friendly person. Her obituary captures her well - what a caring & thoughtful woman. I had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte twice. We talked about her working in Mack Trucking during WWII. I will always remember her fondly and am sad to hear she is gone. My condolences to her family and friends.

Oh my sweet Charlotte. I often think about Charlotte and have such wonderful memories of her at St. Timothy’s and also from the neighborhood. My son and I would often stop in and visit her on our walks around the block. She introduced me to many others in our little corner of Allentown and I helped her with the yard sale for a couple of years. I just learned of her passing today (9/8/20). I am so sad to hear that she is gone, but so very blessed to have known her. She had an incredible spirit and endless energy. God is lucky to add her his choir of angels. For sure!!! May you Rest In Peace.

Heaven is celebrating the arrival of one of its angels on earth. Charlotte was a rare individual. So special that once you met her you never could forget her. This was true whether you were life long friends or were lucky to be the one she chatted with in the grocery aisle. Our family was happy to include Charlotte as family. Her loving and vibrant personality was always a blessing. We miss you Charlotte. The neighborhood lost one of its finest. ❤

Dear, sweet Charlotte. A woman for all seasons & all ages from preschoolers, teens to adults. She was loved and respected by all. The young were happy to hear Charlotte was coming. They lit up & said she made them laugh. They were happy making boxes with her. My door was always open to her and she knew it. Shed pop in just because she needed to get out and said upon leaving now I feel better. We will miss the Wednesday Rumikub games. She was hard to beat! There are many chapters in her life left for us to fulfill by loving, sharing, tolerating & understanding everyone we come to know. Peace be with you, my dear friend. Love you always.

To Tom, Todd and Nancy, Your mother was truly an amazing lady! Tod and I were so very fortunate to have had her in our lives from way back when we all worked together at Mack Engineering's Plant 10 over fifty years ago! Charlotte was our match-maker! She became family to us, and fortunately, our two sons grew up knowing Charlotte. Her energy, caring and laughter were infectious! She touched our hearts with her extraordinary thoughtfulness and love. Knowing her made us all want to be a better person. Seeing her made us smile! We have so many warm wonderful memories. We miss her already!

What a beautiful tribute to an amazing woman. She certainly was The Energizer Bunny. Charlotte was my Sunday School teacher many years ago at St. Timothys. She was also one of the reasons we all had so much fun at Hickory Run. I would see Charlotte over the years when I came to St. Timothys with my Dad who Charlotte called her pew buddy because they sat in the same pew every Sunday. I last saw Charlotte last summer at St. Timothys Wed. Night outdoor service. She told me she wanted to live to 100. How I wish she would have made it. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. Rest In Peace Charlotte.

My sincere sympathy to Charlotte's family. I met Charlotte about 17 years ago at the Days Inn pool. I enjoyed hearing her stories of her life and the "old days" while floating on our pool noodles. She taught me, along with many others at the pool, to play her favorite game, Rummikub, which she always had with her. I called her the Rummikub Queen. I was also in a Bunko group with her - everyone knew when Charlotte had a bunko - she would stand up, wave her arms and yell "I got a bunko!" She was so full of life! I am so sorry, Charlotte, that we never had our planned visit, as it was the first day that visitors were not allowed because of the coronavirus. I will cherish all the good times we had. We now have a new angel watching over us. Rest in peace, Charlotte.

Charlotte was always a spark that brought a smile to me when I saw her, wether it was at the dentist's office, or at a community event. She had been my Cub Scout den mother who taught me to enjoy crafts. She was always a joy during the times at Hickory Run, and appears in my old home movies of times there. And she gave so much of herself to aid others through community functions such as MayFair. She was a great person, and a friend to so many. I always hoped I would see her when out and about, and will miss that anticipation of seeing her smile.

Charlotte was an amazing person, and an Idol of our family. We met Charlotte at the Day's Inn pool years ago, and quickly became friends to all of us. She especially loved talking to the kids. She was a living History about Allentown, and life. She was even the STAR of my daughter's History Day project about Harry Trexler. We took her to Liu's House for lunch as a Thank you, and we laughed the whole time! That was Charlotte, always making people laugh, and seeing the good in everyone! We will surely miss her Christmas poem, and yes, I have saved all her old ones. We will also miss her Letters to the Editor, she surely had a way with words. She will never be forgotten by all who have had the pleasure of meeting her. We are truly sorry for your lose, and express our deepest condolences. She was an Inspiration to us all!

Charlotte and my mom (Elma Mae Uhle) were classmates at Allen High School and had kept in touch with each other over the years. I got to meet her when I escorted my mother to several class reunions, organized by Charlotte. I was so impressed with her lively spirit and outgoing personality. She was a force of nature! She wrote clever poems and I loved reading her Christmas stories that she sent every year to my mom. And every now and then Id see a published letter to the editor in The Morning Call newspaper that she had written - she was so engaged with life! Im grateful I had the chance to speak to her just a short time ago when she called to ask about my mother and to make sure Id wish her a happy birthday. She was one in a million.

Charlotte was always up for whatever life brought to her. Always ready for a new experience and to share it with others.
She was always the first to volunteer. "I make sure I have something to do scheduled each day on my calendar. I must have some reason to get up, showered, dressed and out the door each day."
Her joyful spirit was what I loved most.
Rest in peace, my friend.

Charlotte was a good friend of my mom Velma, who passed nine years ago. They were part of bridge club for over forty years, and would visit our house once year or so. As a kid, I remember Charlotte as being the life of the party, and had a great laugh. As I grew older, I saw how this group of ladies had so much fun once a month playing cards, and playing jokes on each other. I have not seen her in the past ten years, but would often think of her, especially every spring, when she would come to visit the daffodils blooming at our house, and in our church grove in Neffs. She had a wonderful life, rest in peace Charlotte, thanks for the memories.

Nancy, Todd, Tom - Charlotte has been a big part of my life since 1965. She has been with me as a good friend through my life's journey -- matchmaker for me and Larry, watching our kids when we were without child care, co-worker (we started at Mack in the same year), arranging her retirement party at Mack, giving a toast at our 40th wedding anniversary, and so much more. She was an incredible lively person, always ready to take on life. There was no stopping her. She loved you all so much. There was no one like her. Many, many fond memories. Our deepest sympathy. We will miss her.

I met Charlotte at Mayfair Festival of the Arts. Charlotte volunteered for 25 years and was honored more than once for being the "oldest" volunteer. She was also a neighbor and would stop by on her way to St Timothy's or on her way home from lunch after church. She introduced us to the pool where she went swimming everyday! She organized our neighborhood yard sale for many years.
My heart goes out to the entire Mann family but please know she was so proud of all of you and enjoyed talking about each of you and your families. Charlotte was a role model and we loved her dearly!

I was lucky to have Charlotte as my next door neighbor. At the time, my husband worked night shift. I was not comfortable being alone at night with two babies. Our bedroom windows were 10 yards apart. I would check to see the light in charlottes bedroom at 3 am and call her. She would make me feel safe, just knowing she was there. She watched my children when they were infants. She performed puppet shows at my kids birthday parties. We had so many good times on her back porch, enjoying the ferns and her garden waterfall. I loved helping her with yard sales. She would carefully dig 100 ferns from her garden and sell them for $1 a plant. They would sell out in no time and people would come back every year for more I am fortunate to have charlottes ferns in my new home and think of her every time a new fern pops up each year. Charlotte had so many great stories and always had time to chat. She is an inspiration and will be missed tremendously. Loved her so much. My heart goes out to her family. What a wonderful life.

Charlotte and my mom (Vincie Harris, who died in 2017 four months into her second Century on earth) pushed a gift cart together around Lehigh Valley Hospital - Lehigh Valley for many years and she would relate many wonderful stories about their adventures with staff and patients. Wed see the cards Charlotte sent to mom when we visited her. They certainly cheered up thousands of patients during their partnership together. On behalf of the Harris family, our sincerest condolences. They were both great ladies and an inspiration to all that were lucky enough to be in their company.

My deepest condolences to you all! I had the privilege of working with Charlotte for many years at Mack. She was a wonderful mentor, co-worker, cheerleader, but most of all ... the most loving and caring friend to us all. I'll never forget the Christmas she made holly bow ties for all the engineers. They wore them every Christmas from then on. So many great memories of this woman! She spoke of you all often with so much love and pride!! I know the many, many memories and stories you have will comfort you when you miss her most! Rest In Peace dear Charlotte.

Oh what a beautiful tribute to such a beautiful soul. I met your mom in the gift shop at LVCC when I volunteered bringing Communion to the patients, to find out later that she was a dear friend of my friend, Nora Pacer. Holy Saturday did not feel the same this year, as we were not able to have our baskets blessed at St Thomas More where we would see Charlotte and catch up. Oh heaven surely has to be so much more lively upon your arrival! Sending gentle hugs along with our prayers to all of Charlotte's loves.
