Douglas Feaver Obituary

Feaver, Douglas D.Dr. Douglas D. Feaver died peacefully in Moravian Village on April 6, 2015 in Bethlehem, PA at the age of 93. Douglas Feaver was born in 1921 in Toronto, Canada to Charles and Margaret Feaver. He was the first of his family to graduate from college (University of Toronto) and then received his Ph.D. in Classics from Johns Hopkins. He began teaching at Yale University and then moved to Bethlehem in 1956 to become a professor of classics at Lehigh University, where he remained until he retired in 1984. After retirement, he and his wife Margaret joined Youth With a Mission to start up the Humanities and International Studies school of the University of the Nations, based in Kona, Hawaii. Douglas was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church as well as a lay leader in the Lehigh Valley Christian Fellowship. Through those ministries, Lehigh University, and through YWAM, he touched the lives of thousands of people around the world. He will be remembered for his gentle and generous spirit, his steadfastness in the faith, and his deep intellect. His 65-year marriage to Margaret Feaver was a special inspiration and was the subject of a book, One Heart, One Way, written by his son, John. A natural prodigy, he composed the music for his own wedding and composed numerous other pieces in a variety of styles - classical, light-opera, and Christian choruses. Even at 93, he sang in the summer choir at First Presbyterian Church and he left behind a rich archive of poems and reflections, some of which were collected in a book, This Do In Remembrance of Me. Survivors: Wife, Margaret; four children - David, John, Ruth, and Peter; fourteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three of five sisters, Marianne, Grace, and Iris, all living in Canada .Douglas was predeceased by his son Paul. Services: A memorial service is scheduled for 11 A.M. on April 11, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem. Burial at the convenience of the family. Arrangements, Pearson Funeral Home, Bethlehem. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First Presbyterian Church Music Fund at 2344 Center Street, Bethlehem, PA 18017.

Remembering with great fondness Dr Douglas Feaver ~ professor and friend. I so miss his presentations delivered with scholarly acumen, everyday humor and insightful truth. I especially miss the communion times when he presided and broke bread with us in our community in YWAM Kona, HI The times he came and played his self made cello in our home remain as sweetly treasured memories. How well I remember a beautiful evening of worship in our home in Kona with Douglas and Margaret, members of our family and Margaret Tooley. We worshiped with hymns we all knew and loved with the Presence of God so rich and real amongst us. Dr Feaver told us about the cello he had made ~ amazing and greatly treasured memory...one of so very many with both Douglas and Margaret.

I met Douglas Feaver during my time on staff at YWAM, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 1984 -1986 (I worked in the Personnel Office with Stan & Margaret Suderow), along with his dear wife, Margaret Feaver. He was such a kind man, along with Margaret, and always had a smile and was available to talk for a moment, as we saw each other on the campus of what is now, the University of the Nations. I will never forget him, and treasure my friendship with him and his dear wife, Margaret!

I went to high school with Doug in Scarborough. We were both in the school orchestra and he made his own cello. He was very clever then and always a perfect gentleman. Josiveve Tiffin Green

Dearest Margaret,
How I loved being with you and Douglas. It seems wrong to use the words 'worked with' because with both of you it was never work! It seems just a short while ago because it is still so vivid. God in His extravagant love allowed me the privilege of your covering and friendship. What was imparted is still an integral part of my life. Gladly I recall Douglas' and your prayers. Douglas' humor, servant heart, clever wit, skillful words, love of God and beauty were great gifts to so many. Douglas was a truly unique treasure, shining now in heaven. My heart goes out to you and your family in your loss. I pray that the One who holds you in His everlasting arms will strengthen and comfort you in all the ways that you need. With much love and respect, Paula

I have very fond memories of spending time with my friend, David, at the Feaver household while growing up. Mr. Feaver was a wonderful example to all the young people who visited there. Dr Feaver left his mark on many lives over his years. I knew him when he and Margaret were in Kona at the University of the Nations. My wife Judi and I have coveted their friendship over the years. We were saddened to hear of Dr Feaver's home-going. We know heaven is much richer with the music and wisdom he has brought there. May God's comfort be upon each member of the Feaver family. We love you.

Dr. Feaver was one of the key architects in the launching and conceptualization of the University of the Nations in Youth With A Mission, Kona, Hawaii. He was a great scholar and a great man of God. We still remember his words when he prayed over us at our graduation from UofN in 1992. Well done good and faithful servant!
Our deepest condolences goes to the family, especially Mrs. Feaver.

Dear Mrs. Feaver, My daughter and I were so sad when we heard the news that Mr. Feaver had died. What a precious couple you two were. Always in our memory side by side! I remember you telling me how you would sit together after dinner and pray for the needs of the world. What an example to all of us. We are privileged to have known you and we're sending a hug for you especially this week.

I got to know Dr. Feaver years ago when I was the speaker for an International Students conference held at Emmanuel EC Church in Bethlehem and coordinated by Dr. Feaver and Dr. Alan Pense (Professor of Metallurgy and eventual Provost)of Lehigh.

I later met Dr. Fever again at the First Baptist Church of Allentown.

Sorry to see this outstanding man pass on, but he had a significant and influential life, and his faith and knowledge were inspirations to others.
