The world is not as bright and beautiful as it used to be. Our brightest light is now gone.
I loved him with all my heart and will miss him terribly. But I am sure he will live on in his art, in our hearts, and in the woods that he cherished so much.
Grief truly is the cost of loving.
My sincere condolences to his children, grandchildren, and family.

I'd like to pass along what is probably a little known part of Harold's life that we and others shared with him.
I was a member of an olympic weightlifting club that trained at the "Y" (7th & Hamilton) under the auspices of Dale Hartman, a local successful bodybuilder/weightlifter. When we felt ready, we entered the US AAU Novice weightlifting contest in Philadelphia. Being a team event we needed to be represented in all weight classes so we enlisted skinny Harold to fill the 132# class. We helped him train for the event which didn't take much as he was into lifting back then.
I'll finish my story by quoting the Call Chronicle's article. It was from either '55 or '56.
LOCAL YM WEIGHT TEAM PHILA. VICTOR
"The U.S. AAU barbell novice meet was won by the Allentown YMCA unit at Philadelphia on Saturday night. Reading finished second."
"The outstanding win scored by Allentown was by Harold Monk Jr. in the 132# class. John De-Long was second in the 181# class. Harry Simpson tied for third in the 165# class. Allentown's team was coached by Dale Hartman, and included Al Minotola, Eugene Dieter, and James Royer."
Another facet of Harold's life.

Harold, I had the pleasure of meeting you and your sweet son only one week before you moved on into the eternity your beautiful mind could even comprehend. You gave me one of your prized cactus in which I spotted immediately entering your humble abode. As I sit here writing your cactus is in the sunshine growing such as you said it would. That day I met a truly unusual man with an insight to spirituality like no other I had ever met.His persona had left so enlightened,But,also helped two kids many years ago with his wisdom. They are now very successful individuals. I know this for a fact because one of them is my fiance. He took me that special day to meet you.Every time I look at that cactus your legacy will live on. I will also think of your family as they heal from your passing into your special place.

Dear Hal,
We met back in 1967 when my older brother met you at Elmer Helds Service Station formerly on Hamilton Street. I recently started learning Karate from another person when my brother learned that you were an excellent instructor. My brother walked up to you and said "I'm a coward can you help me?" You said yes and my brother started with you. I had several months of training with this other instructor when my brother came home after a few lessons from you and I couldn't touch him. Needless to say I went to the next lesson with my brother. Hal you've been a mentor, friend and the best karate Instructor I ever knew. I had my first Black belt in one year from you and kept accelerating along with my brother for the next 16 years. What amazed me the most about your style was it is totally unorthodox. No one was able to read my next move other than you. You trained me when I was 6'3" and weighed 286lbs. The greatest compliment you made to me was if I was ever able to actually hit you it would you down. I always knew that no matter how many years passed I could never beat you. In fact you were my only challenge, other instructors learned I was trained by you.
With your help I trained other black belt over the years. Some of those students were assaulted but won. I never had to use my knowledge probably due to my size and you taught me how to pick out the leader and frightened him to death without touching him.
Back in the late 70's I was living with my brother in Miami Fl. going to aviation school. I was living at a fraternity house that my brother was in charge of. One evening a gang of town young adults attempted to pick a street fight at our frat house. I immediately went into the middle of the street and asked who wants to be maimed first! I must of had the look of a Pit Bull in my eyes because no one moved from either side. I ordered the town men to leave. I will never forget the stunned and shocked look on the faces of my frat brothers. My brother watched the whole thing. Due to your teaching I didn't need to use violence although I was prepared to take on multiple assailants.
You and I were going to meet the day after you passed away. You wanted to explain something to me that you knew only my brother and I would understand. I'll always regret missing you that day but I did bring over two friends to meet you the week before. You made quite an impression! I know you will let me know in you own way sooner or later what you wanted so much to tell us that day you past when you are ready........................
Hal I think about you often, May God bless and keep you.
Sincerely Mark

I had only met Harold three times and those visits were toward the very end of his life. Harold and I connected on a very deep level - it was painfully obvious that he was on a very different plane than just about anyone else I had ever met. One thing among others we shared was our common interest in barns. Harold came out of a very different mold - that is for sure. I wonder if there is even one person very much like Harold for every county in all the states. If we do - then this world is a better place than I could have imagined.
I am sorry Harold that I did not meet you when we were both much younger - but finally we did meet. I think Harold was a mentor's mentor. That is the kind of person he was. I hope that I will see you someday on the other side my friend. You knew what other people can not even imagine. All you had to do was to look at the man to know that - I am a better person that I met Harold Monk.

I was taken aback when I saw Hal's name. 3 reasons, I hadn't seen him in over 20 years, I was shocked to see he was 78 and saddened to hear he crossed over. I am so sorry for your loss.

Harold and I grew up together in West Allentown. We were good friends until our 20's when our work caused us to lose contact with each other. By that time he was already "into" metal sculptures and martial arts. I remember his children when they were babies. May he rest in peace.
